CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF THETHRESHOLD

“You’re an expensive mistake, old man,” the heavy set one said. He didn’t spit, but his jaw stayed low, loose with the unearned confidence of thirty years and a black leather jacket that smelled of stale tobacco and cheap vinyl. He stood right where the asphalt rotted into sand, blocking the rusted iron gate of the parish. Behind him, the engine of the dark sedan gave off a rhythmic, ticking heat.

David didn’t shift his weight. The white fabric of his dress shirt was hot across his shoulder blades, stiff with starch and the dry wind coming off the scrub oak flats. He could feel the small iron tractor bolt in his right trousers pocket—heavy, blunt, biting into his thigh.

“The gate is closed to vehicles,” David said. His voice was flat, dried out by decades of sand and routine. “Move the car.”

“The car stays. The parish pays,” the younger man replied, a crooked grin spreading across facial tattoos that looked like blue mold under the midday sun. He took a heavy step forward, his boots stirring up a pale cloud of lime dust. “We’re rewriting the lease on this county, uncle. Your name isn’t on the ledger.”

The distance closed before the dust could settle.

It wasn’t the roaring anger of the old days; it was the cold, unblinking math of an engine that knew exactly how much fuel it had left. When the leather jacket swung—a clumsy, wide right hook designed to terrify shopkeepers—David simply stepped inside the arc. The air left the younger man’s lungs with a wet whuff as David’s forearm caught him flush across the sternum, followed by a short, functional sweep that used the enforcer’s own bulk against him.

The heavy man hit the gray dirt with a thud that vibrated through David’s heels.

David stood above him, his dark veteran cap shadow-casting his eyes into total obscurity. His hands stayed down, fingers hooked slightly, checking the horizon for a second vehicle. Nothing but the heat haze and the white glare of the church wall. Beneath him, the enforcer groaned, a red smudge beginning to ruin the blue ink on his jawline.

David reached into his pocket, turning the dry iron bolt once, twice, against his thumb. The victory felt like ash. He had broken the silence of the valley, and the valley never forgot a noise.

He looked down at the dazed man, then toward the sedan’s dashboard. Sitting right there in the open passenger seat, partially obscured by a greasy baseball cap, was a leather-bound military logbook with David’s own old unit stencil fading across the corner.
