The driver wouldn’t budge. The resistance traveling up the hardened steel shaft felt dead, lacking the clean elasticity of true military-grade magnesium alloy. Mac settled his calloused thumb against the end cap, applying steady, linear downward pressure to prevent the small bit from camming out and ruining the deep-set brass screw. Under his palm, the compact housing hummed with an uneven vibration that felt like a dying heartbeat.
“Don’t force it, old man,” Derek Vance said, his thin fingers digging into the edge of his tablet until the plastic casing flared pale gray under his nails. “The torque parameters are calibrated down to the micron. You’re trying to muscle a system that operates on micro-voltages.”
Mac didn’t answer with words. He adjusted his stance, his worn leather boot heels grinding slightly against the grit of the concrete floor. He knew the limits of materials. He knew exactly how much force a copper-alloy thread could take before it stripped clean out of its seat. He gave the offset driver a short, controlled burst of wrist torque—not a pull, but a sudden shock.
A loud, metallic fracture echoed inside the casing.
“It’s centered!” Specialist Miller shouted, his face illuminated by the bright amber glow of the diagnostic screen. “The ghost reticles just snapped together. One clean intersection. It’s holding, Msgt!”
“It isn’t holding,” Mac said, his voice flat, devoid of any celebratory lift. He didn’t remove the driver. Instead, he pulled it out slowly, holding the tool up to the harsh fluorescent light. Embedded within the dark graphite grease on the steel tip were minute, glistening silver flakes. Not metal shavings. They were tiny, granular chips of a brittle, desaturated polymer material that looked like charcoal dust. “Watch the thermal curve on your monitor, Miller.”
The active-duty specialist leaned closer to the flat panel, his short buzz cut coming within inches of the glass interface. The primary temperature sensor for the focal plane array was climbing, but the automated diagnostic was no longer looping. It had bypassed the warning, forced into an unnatural compliance by the manual override. Then, the central crosshairs shivered. They didn’t drift this time; they dropped, sinking five mils down into the lower left quadrant as if the entire inner core of the optic had simply collapsed.
“What did you do?” Vance lunged toward the heavy oak workbench, his face completely pale now, the arrogance stripped away to reveal a raw, sweating panic. He pointed a trembling finger at the display. “You just stripped the internal carriage! The diagnostic loop was a software handshake failure, and you just forced a mechanical tolerance that wasn’t designed for manual manipulation!”
“The screw didn’t strip, son,” Mac said calmly. He reached down with his oil-stained thumb and wiped the granular dust off the tip of his driver, letting the dry, gray particles fall onto the clean surface of the workbench. “The screw is brass. The sleeve it’s threaded into isn’t magnesium alloy. It’s molded synthetic resin. When the testing lamp heated the housing to one hundred and forty degrees, the outer metal expanded at one rate, and your cheap plastic core softened at another. The software was looping because it kept trying to drive the alignment motor past the physical stop to compensate for a warped bed.”
Vance’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His frantic finger-tapping against the tablet stopped entirely. The red warning light on the unit’s cradle blinked twice and went dark, the optic completely dead.
Sergeant First Class Rodriguez stepped up from behind Miller, his heavy frame casting a long shadow across the bench. He reached out and picked up a pinch of the gray residue Mac had dropped on the wood. He rubbed it between his thick fingertips, smelling it briefly before looking directly at Vance. “This isn’t aerospace composite, Mr. Vance. I’ve seen this stuff in commercial rifle stocks from civilian hunting shops. It gets brittle when it freezes and turns to mush when it sits inside a closed vehicle in July.”
“It’s a proprietary proprietary polymer matrix,” Vance stammered, his voice losing its transactional edge, becoming thin and defensive. “It was thoroughly vetted during the engineering phase to reduce the overall weight profile of the infantry combat kit. The digital simulation profiles showed zero variance under standard operational environments.”
“A soldier isn’t a simulation, son,” Mac said, his ice-blue eyes locking onto Vance with the cold, unyielding weight of an operator who had spent months in the dense jungles of Southeast Asia with gear that had been built by the lowest bidder. “A soldier doesn’t live in a cleanroom. When Miller here is lying in a ditch in ninety percent humidity, his scope shouldn’t change its zero just because the sun hits the left side of the tube.”
Miller looked up from the screen, his expression hardening as he looked at the dead prototype. “Msgt, the tech reps told us these units failed at Bliss because the operators were tracking targets too fast for the refresh rate. They made us sign off on an equipment liability waiver before the field exercise.”
“They were covering the warp,” Mac murmured. He picked up the compact XM-30 unit from the cradle, ignoring the heat that bit into his palm. He turned it over, pointing the jeweler’s driver toward the small, recessed serial plate near the base. The plate was stamped with a standard military contract sequence, but the finish around the rivets was rough, the paint slightly flaked away to reveal a second, older set of drill holes beneath the metal. “The decoy was the software loop. They wanted you looking at the code so you wouldn’t notice how light this thing is. But this housing isn’t just missing its magnesium core. The balance is entirely wrong.”
Mac’s hand tightened around the metal tube. He felt an unnatural lightness near the objective bell—a spatial discrepancy that didn’t align with the technical manuals he had spent forty years cataloging. The structural status of the device was a lie, but it wasn’t an accidental engineering mistake. It was a substitution.
“Vance,” Rodriguez said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone that made the junior technicians at the glass consoles freeze. “Where are the original magnesium core assemblies that were specified in the initial operational capability document?”
Vance didn’t answer. He backed away a single step, his white lab coat catching on the corner of a diagnostic rack, his tablet clutched against his chest like a dead weight.
Mac set the scope down on the oak wood with a heavy, hollow click that resonated through the quiet room. “The blueprint the General gave me three weeks ago didn’t have these polymer dimensions on it, Vance. The original specifications for the lens-train shoulder were written in manual ink, seventy-two thousandths thicker than this shell. Someone altered the factory limits to make sure the digital sensors wouldn’t trip an error until the units were already shipped and paid for.”
The room went completely silent except for the low, rhythmic cooling fan of the test monitor. The first layer of the deception had shattered on the workbench, but the true depth of the fracture went far deeper than a warped piece of plastic.
