CHAPTER 12: THE FRACTURED STEEL
The smoke inside the subterranean ballistic lane at Aberdeen didn’t clear; it clung to the concrete reinforcement ribs, smelling heavily of nitrogen, burnt cordite, and the bitter tang of overstressed steel. The multi-million-dollar remote testing cradle was twisted five degrees off its mounting track, its hydraulic fluid leaking in a slow, toxic amber puddle onto the grease-stained floor plates.
Mac stood background left, his denim overalls looking stark and archaic under the fierce yellow glare of the safety strobe lights. He didn’t have a digital analysis screen or an acoustic sensor grid. He held a three-inch brass magnifying loop directly to his right eye, his thick, oil-grained fingers turning a five-inch chunk of sheared rifle barrel under the light.
“The split didn’t start at the neck, son,” Mac said, his raspy baritone low and unbothered by the automated evacuation alarms still pulsing through the facility walls. “Look at the grain along the fracture line. It looks like coarse gray sugar. That’s not an over-pressure spike from the powder charge. The metal didn’t stretch before it broke—it shattered like glass.”
“The automation log recorded a normal chamber pressure until the moment of ignition, Msgt,” Specialist Miller said, standing foreground right. His active-duty uniform was smudged with black residue where he had dragged the broken weapon system out from the armored blast box. “The tech reps from Vance Systems told the range officer that the wildcat cartridge load we pulled from your seventy-two ledger was mathematically unstable for the modern gas port geometry.”
“The geometry hasn’t changed since the Civil War, Miller,” Mac murmured. He set the heavy steel fragment down on a stainless-steel mobile workstation with a sharp, iron ring. “You drill a hole in a pipe, the gas pushes the bullet out the front and the pressure drops out the side. Except right here where the port meets the barrel sleeve.”
Mac guided his stubby offset jeweler’s driver into the recessed gas block channel of the fractured prototype. The tool didn’t slide smoothly; it hit a distinct, granular resistance—a microscopic, hexagonal burr left inside the metal by a machining tool that had been run too fast or with a dull edge. He twisted the driver, scraping a tiny ribbon of dark material onto his thumb. Not iron filings. It was the same gray, brittle composite polymer resin they had found inside the XM-30 rifle scope at Fort Meade.
“They didn’t just substitute the core of the optics, Specialist,” Investigator Miller said, stepping down from the control observation deck, his leather jacket slick with the cold rain that was leaking through the facility’s exhaust vents. “They used the exact same commercial resin matrix to plug the manufacturing tolerances in the barrel sleeve. The digital diagnostic software was programmed to read the composite sleeve as solid high-tensile steel during the factory acceptance scans.”
“They glued the barrel into the receiver,” Specialist Miller whispered, his athletic frame going completely rigid as the true scope of the compromise settled into the room. “If that sleeve softens after three rapid rounds in a hot climate—”
“The barrel moves forty thousandths forward,” Mac finished for him, his ice-blue eyes perfectly flat as he looked toward the reinforced observation window. “The next round chambers too deep, the bolt head loses its mechanical lock, and the whole receiver explodes right into the soldier’s cheek-piece. It’s a clean kill, but it’s not the enemy doing the shooting.”
Behind the thick glass of the observation booth, the internal security gate clanked shut. Derek Vance stood on the opposite side of the partition, flanked by two corporate security officers wearing black tactical vests and holding encrypted communication tablets. Vance’s face was devoid of its former performance; the red flush was gone, replaced by a cold, desperate administrative calculation.
“This range is officially under corporate inventory lockdown,” Vance’s voice crackled through the intercom system, thin and metallic. “The testing data from the wildcat validation sequence has been archived under a national security non-disclosure directive. Sergeant Rodriguez and Specialist Miller are ordered to return to their quarters immediately pending an internal administrative review.”
Mac didn’t look up at the speaker. He simply unrolled his canvas tool pouch across the top of the fractured steel workstation, the heavy iron wrenches clicking against the metal with a slow, deliberate cadence that sounded exactly like the closing of a bolt. “Your database is three floors up, Vance. But the physics of this barrel is right here on the table. Tell your sister to prepare the second indictment, because we aren’t leaving the lane until we check the pressure on the next crate.”
