CHAPTER 2: THE THERMAL LOCK
“Shut it down! It’s cycling past the thermal baseline!”
Derek Vance’s voice hit a sharp, panicky octave that didn’t match his tailored lab coat. The advanced optics cradle was screaming—a high-frequency mechanical protest that vibrated right through the heavy oak workbench. On the master diagnostic screen, the digital crosshairs didn’t just drift; they jittered like a dying nerve, casting a harsh blue strobe across Specialist Miller’s rigid face.
“The automated program is locked, sir,” one of the junior techs yelled back, his fingers flying across a grease-smeared glass console. “The algorithm is trying to compensate for a alignment offset, but it’s looping. The software isn’t recognizing the physical feedback from the core assembly.”
Mac didn’t step back. He stood close enough to feel the heat radiating from the compact XM-30 prototype. The air above the housing carried the sharp, synthetic tang of baking insulation and overstressed circuitry. To Vance, it was a software anomaly, a glitch in the lines of code rushing down the monitor. To Mac, it was the oldest story in the world: metal meeting friction, and losing.
“You’re cooking the glass,” Mac said. He didn’t yell, but the low baritone of his voice cut beneath the electronic whine. His eyes were fixed on the perimeter of the magnesium-alloy casing. Except it didn’t look right. Under the fierce fluorescent lights, the reflection along the seam didn’t have the clean, sharp fracture lines of machined metal. It looked soft. “The housing isn’t venting. Your automated rig is pulling the lens-train tighter against a shoulder that’s already warping under the lamp.”
“Don’t touch that table,” Vance snapped, lunging forward with his tablet held like a shield between Mac and the cradle. His face had gone a mottled, dangerous red. “The XM-30 uses a closed-loop digital matrix. The code is proprietary. It’s self-correcting. If the telemetry is looping, it’s an external data corruption, not a mechanical failure. Your manual metrics are twenty years out of date, MacAllister.”
“Look at the screen, son,” Mac murmured, pointing a thick, calloused index finger toward the test monitor.
The digital crosshairs had completely fractured now, splitting into three distinct ghost images that drifted toward the upper right quadrant. The diagnostic software threw a sequence of amber warnings, then locked. Error 404: Sub-assembly Alignment Unresponsive.
Specialist Miller stepped closer to the bench, his boots clicking hard against the concrete floor. His hands were tucked tightly into his belt, but his shoulders were leaning toward Mac, away from the frantic civilian contractor. “Msgt, if that lens-train locks completely, the whole housing goes blind. We had three of these prototypes drop dead in the sand during the pre-deployment trials at Fort Bliss. The tech reps told us it was a software patch issue.”
“They lied to you,” Mac said. He reached down into the pocket of his denim overalls, his fingers brushing past the cold weight of his brass casing keychain until they found what he was looking for: an old, stubby offset jeweler’s driver, its steel bit darkened by decades of graphite lubricant. “A software patch doesn’t change the expansion rate of a poorly seated ring. Look right here where the main objective meets the focal plane.”
“Step away from the prototype!” Vance’s voice cracked. He looked back at Sergeant First Class Rodriguez, his eyes pleading for institutional authority. “Sergeant, restrain this man. He is interfering with a tier-one contract demonstration. This is a direct violation of safety protocols.”
Rodriguez didn’t move. He stood with his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes narrowed as he watched Mac’s steady hands. The non-commissioned officer knew the sound of a machine tearing itself apart from the inside out; he had heard it in armored personnel carriers and broken generators from Kandahar to the delta. “Let the man look, Mr. Vance. Your system is already down. Unless your tablet can turn a screw, we’re standing around watching money melt.”
Mac didn’t wait for the argument to settle. His hand moved with a fluid, heavy certainty that left no room for hesitation. He didn’t touch the digital interface; he didn’t look at the flashing red error logs. He placed his left palm directly over the top of the hot optical housing, using the weight of his upper body to stabilize the vibrating cradle against the oak bench. The metal was hot enough to sting, the heat soaking into his thick skin, but his grip didn’t flinch.
With his right hand, he guided the small steel driver into the dark recess beneath the manual override port. The tool found the slot of the deep-set brass calibration screw.
The moment the metal bit engaged, Mac felt it through the handle—an irregular, gritty drag that told him everything the digital sensors were blind to. The threads weren’t smooth. They were binding, pinched by a structural deformation that was tightening like a vise around the internal glass elements.
“Miller,” Mac commanded, his voice dropping into the familiar cadence of the firing line. “Get your eyes on the test monitor. Don’t look at the numbers. Look at the central reticle intersection. Tell me when the ghost images begin to merge.”
“Sir, yes sir,” Miller said, instinctively dropping into a rigid, attentive stance at the foreground right of the bench. He leaned in, his eyes locked on the pixelated display.
Vance stood frozen, his tablet clutched so tightly against his white coat that the plastic casing groaned. “This is unauthorized. If you strip those internal threads, MacAllister, I’ll see to it that your pension is attached to the replacement cost.”
Mac ignored him. He turned the driver less than three degrees to the left. The resistance was immense, far greater than a brass screw in a magnesium socket should ever offer. There was a faint, metallic pop from inside the casing—the sound of overstressed material shifting under pressure.
“The ghosting is slowing down,” Miller called out, his voice sharp with excitement. “The left line is moving toward center. But it’s jumping, Msgt. It’s not a smooth track.”
“Because the seat isn’t round anymore,” Mac muttered, his ice-blue eyes tracking the slight, microscopic distortion of the outer housing under the glare of the lab lamps. The decoy was obvious now: the software was failing because it was programmed to think the internal cylinder was perfect. It was correcting for an error that didn’t exist in the code, while the true structural failure was hidden right beneath the surface. “Watch the next turn. This is where the alignment matters.”
