Chapter 1: The Cart Across the Lane

The beige golf cart was parked sideways across the narrow lane, leaving no room to pass.

Frank Dalton stopped about eight feet away.

For a moment, he thought the driver might move.

He didn’t.

The man behind the wheel was in his early fifties, wearing a navy polo, khaki shorts, and an expression that suggested the road belonged to him. His name was Ryan Mercer, a resident Frank had seen around the community but never had much reason to know.

Ryan leaned casually against the steering wheel.

Frank tightened his grip on the small canvas shopping bag hanging from his hand.

“Move it.”

His voice was low.

Ryan smiled.

“You’re not going through here.”

Frank looked past him at the empty lane.

There was nothing blocking it except the golf cart.

Frank had lived in Willow Creek Estates for six years. It was a quiet gated retirement community with winding walking lanes, small detached homes, manicured lawns, and a fleet of beige golf carts used by residents and maintenance crews.

The lane was not private.

Everyone knew that.

Frank also knew something else.

Ryan had no reason to be sitting there.

Frank stepped forward.

He reached the driver’s door and pulled it open.

The door clicked sharply.

Ryan’s casual expression vanished.

He grabbed the steering wheel with both hands.

Frank kept one hand on the open door.

“Then get out.”

Ryan stared at him.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Frank noticed the ignition key.

He reached inside.

Ryan reacted too late.

Frank pulled the key free in one clean motion.

The metal jingled in his palm.

Ryan lunged toward it.

Frank stepped backward.

“Hey!”

But Frank was already out of reach.

He closed his fingers around the key and held it at his side.

Ryan climbed halfway out of the cart.

Frank didn’t raise his voice.

“Then get out and move it.”

Ryan’s face hardened.

The confidence had disappeared.

He stepped onto the pavement, staring at the key as if Frank had taken something far more valuable than a piece of metal.

The cart remained exactly where it was, still blocking the lane.

Ryan looked at Frank.

Then at the key.

Then back at the cart.

His voice dropped.

“You really don’t know whose cart that is.”

Frank’s eyes narrowed.

For the first time, he wondered whether he had just made a very serious mistake.

He looked down at the key in his hand.

It suddenly felt heavier.

And Ryan wasn’t smiling anymore.
