Chapter 5: The Letter

Frank read the letter twice.

It accused him of taking possession of private property.

It demanded the immediate return of the golf-cart key.

It also suggested that Frank’s actions had created a safety concern.

Elaine would have laughed at the wording.

Frank didn’t.

He called Susan.

She told him not to respond directly.

“Bring it to the board tomorrow.”

That night, Frank barely slept.

He wasn’t frightened of Ryan.

He was frightened of what could happen when an ordinary disagreement turned into something formal and expensive.

At breakfast, he opened the folder again.

Then he noticed something.

The key.

It wasn’t merely a key.

A small plastic tag was attached to it.

On the tag was a faded number.

Frank remembered seeing the same number on the community’s transportation inventory.

He photographed it.

Then he called Susan.

She asked him to bring the key back to the office.

When Frank arrived, Susan was waiting with the maintenance supervisor.

The supervisor took one look at the number.

His expression changed.

“That cart hasn’t been listed in our active fleet for years.”

Frank stared at him.

“Then why is it here?”

The supervisor checked the records.

The cart had been transferred to a storage property after the original agreement expired.

But the transfer paperwork was incomplete.

Someone had apparently brought the vehicle back into the community without updating the records.

Susan looked troubled.

“Who authorized that?”

Nobody knew.

Then Margaret arrived carrying another document.

She had found something in an old community newsletter.

The golf cart had not simply been donated by Walter Mercer.

It had been dedicated in memory of his wife.

Her name was Evelyn.

Frank remembered her too.

A kind woman who used to organize holiday meals for residents who lived alone.

Margaret pointed to an old photograph.

There was Evelyn standing beside the exact golf cart.

A handwritten plaque was visible behind her.

Frank read the inscription.

For the neighbors who should never have to walk alone.

He looked at Susan.

“That doesn’t sound like private property.”

“No,” she said.

“It doesn’t.”

Then the maintenance supervisor found the final piece.

A transfer note from years earlier.

It had been signed by Walter himself.

The cart was intended to remain available to the community.

Frank looked toward the office window.

Across the street, Ryan’s truck was parked.

Someone had just stepped out.

Ryan.

He wasn’t alone.

A second man was standing beside him.

And Frank recognized him immediately.

He was Ryan’s attorney.
