Chapter 6: What Ryan Was Really Trying to Protect
The attorney’s presence changed the atmosphere.
But the facts changed it more.
The board reviewed the old agreement and the transfer records.
The golf cart was not Ryan’s personal vehicle.
It had been designated for community use.
The confusion had lasted for years because the records were incomplete.
But that still didn’t explain why Ryan had been using it to control the lane.
Susan finally asked him.
Ryan sat silently for a long time.
Then his shoulders dropped.
“My father promised me something.”
No one interrupted.
“He told me the north side would stay protected.”
“Protected from what?” Susan asked.
Ryan swallowed.
“Development.”
Frank understood.
Walter had spent years fighting proposals that would have changed the character of the community.
Ryan believed his father’s wishes had been ignored.
But instead of bringing the issue to the board, he had begun treating certain spaces as if they were his responsibility.
He had put up unofficial signs.
He had questioned contractors.
He had blocked lanes.
He had convinced himself that control was the same thing as stewardship.
That distinction had hurt people.
An elderly resident had missed a medical transport because Ryan had blocked the pickup lane.
A contractor had left after being confronted.
A family visiting their mother had been told to leave an area Ryan considered restricted.
One by one, the stories emerged.
Ryan listened.
His face became increasingly uncomfortable.
Finally, Frank spoke.
“You cared about what your father built.”
Ryan looked at him.
“I did.”
“But you started protecting it from the people it was built for.”
Ryan said nothing.
The board decided the cart would be returned to community service.
The unofficial restrictions would be removed.
The complaints would be formally reviewed.
And Ryan would have to stop acting on behalf of the community without authorization.
No one celebrated.
It wasn’t that kind of victory.
Frank knew that.
He also knew the story wasn’t over.
Because one question remained.
Why had Ryan been so determined to control the north lane?
The answer came two days later.
A developer had submitted a proposal.
And the proposal included the land directly beside the walking path.
