Chapter 7: The Real Threat

The proposed development would not immediately destroy the community.

But it would change it.

A row of new buildings was planned near the north boundary.

Residents were divided.

Some wanted the new amenities.

Others feared traffic, construction, and the loss of green space.

Ryan had discovered the proposal months earlier.

He had panicked.

His father had spent years preserving the community’s character, and Ryan believed the board was about to surrender it.

Instead of organizing a proper response, he had taken matters into his own hands.

That explained his behavior.

It didn’t excuse it.

Frank attended the community meeting.

For once, Ryan sat quietly in the back.

Residents spoke one after another.

Some supported the development.

Some opposed it.

Others wanted more information before deciding.

Frank listened.

Then he stood.

He didn’t tell anyone what decision to make.

He simply said that disagreements had to be handled openly.

“If we want to protect this place,” he said, “we can’t become the reason people stop trusting one another.”

The room went quiet.

Ryan looked down.

After the meeting, he approached Frank outside.

“I owe you an apology.”

Frank didn’t answer immediately.

Ryan looked toward the golf cart parked beside the office.

“I thought if I controlled the lanes, I could control what happened next.”

“You couldn’t.”

“I know.”

Frank nodded.

That was enough.

But Ryan wasn’t finished.

He reached into his pocket and handed Frank an old photograph.

It showed Walter and Evelyn standing beside the golf cart.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Frank read it.

Take care of the neighbors. The rest can be argued about.

Frank looked up.

Ryan’s eyes were wet.

“My father wrote that before he died.”

Frank handed the photograph back.

“He knew the difference.”

“Between what?”

Frank glanced toward the lane.

“Taking care of people and controlling them.”

Ryan nodded.

Neither man said anything else.
