Chapter 1: The Cane in Her Hand

The cane scraped sharply across the asphalt.

It was the sound that made several heads turn.

An elderly man in a light blue shirt was already halfway across the residential-community crosswalk when a large woman in a blazing-orange puffer vest stepped directly into his path and grabbed the handle of his walking cane.

She pulled.

The elderly man stopped instantly.

His silver-white head turned toward her, his expression changing from confusion to disbelief.

The woman, Karen, leaned toward him with a tight smile that carried no friendliness at all. Her fluorescent pink handbag swung against her hip as she tightened her grip.

“You’re not taking another step until you tell me why you’re crossing here!”

The cane scraped again.

The old man tightened both hands around it.

“Because this is a crosswalk,” he said. “And you just grabbed the cane I need to walk.”

Karen’s smile vanished.

She had expected resistance, perhaps a nervous apology. Instead, the man stood there steadily, his dark green jacket moving slightly in the afternoon breeze.

Behind him, the white stripes of the crosswalk stretched toward the opposite sidewalk.

There was nowhere he needed to explain himself.

Karen gave the cane another tug.

The man’s shoes shifted half an inch, but he did not retreat.

“I watched you stop in the middle of the street and hold everybody up,” she snapped.

He looked down at her hand.

Then he looked directly into her eyes.

“You didn’t stop me. You stopped me because you decided you could control where I walk.”

For a moment, Karen seemed unable to answer.

Then the elderly man pulled.

The cane came free.

Karen’s hand slipped from the handle, and the man immediately planted the rubber tip firmly against the asphalt.

Tap.

He took one careful step.

Then another.

Karen moved with him.

“That cane doesn’t give you the right to make everyone wait for you.”

The old man stopped.

He raised the cane vertically between them—not as a weapon, but as a boundary.

“And your impatience doesn’t give you the right to take it.”

The words landed harder than either of them expected.

Karen stared at him.

Then her eyes moved toward the cane.

Toward the crosswalk.

Toward the houses beyond it.

The old man continued walking.

He didn’t hurry. He didn’t run. He didn’t look back.

He simply crossed the street the way he had intended to in the first place.

When he reached the final white stripe, Karen pulled her smartphone from the fluorescent pink handbag.

She raised it toward him.

The old man stopped at the curb.

Karen’s face hardened.

“If an old man using a cane is the problem just because he makes you wait ten seconds,” she said, “what does that say about the kind of neighborhood you think you’re entitled to control?”

Her thumb hovered over the screen.

The phone had not started recording yet.

But the elderly man noticed something else.

Across the intersection, mounted high on a metal pole, a traffic camera pointed directly at the crosswalk.

And Karen had noticed it too.

That was when the old man realized this might be about something much bigger than ten seconds.
