Chapter 1: “Then Come Get It”

The wheelchair stopped so sharply that one of its front wheels squeaked against the supermarket tile.

“Karen! You just took that from my basket—move!”

The elderly man’s voice cut through the ordinary hum of the checkout area.

Karen did not move.

She stood directly across the extra-wide clearance leading to the accessible checkout lane, her enormous frame filling the opening. Her fluorescent hot-pink satin jacket caught the harsh supermarket lights. Bright yellow blouse. Scarlet-red pants. Orange platform sneakers. A candy-pink handbag hanging from one shoulder.

In her hand was a small boxed item she had just snatched from the man’s grocery basket.

She lifted it toward her face and smiled.

“Then come get it.”

For a moment, the man simply stared at her.

His name was Walter Hayes. He was seventy-eight years old, and he had spent most of his life learning that dignity often meant refusing to make a scene.

But there were limits.

His silver-white hair was neatly combed beneath the fluorescent lights. His rectangular glasses had slipped slightly down his nose. One hand rested on the mobility controls of his sturdy four-wheel chair.

The other remained extended.

“Give it back.”

Karen tucked the box behind her hip.

“Maybe you should learn to shop without expecting everyone to get out of your way.”

Walter looked past her toward the accessible lane.

There was no other practical route into the checkout area. The standard lanes were packed with carts, displays, and narrow gaps that his wheelchair could not safely navigate.

“I am not asking you to get out of my way,” he said. “I’m asking you to stop blocking the only entrance.”

Karen widened her stance.

Walter slowly steered left.

Karen stepped left.

He stopped.

She stopped.

He tried the other direction.

She moved with him.

The realization settled over his face.

“You’re doing this on purpose.”

“Of course I am.”

She said it almost proudly.

Walter’s jaw tightened.

“You’re holding my property.”

“Then tell me why you need it so badly.”

She finally held the box where he could see it.

A bright red pharmacy-style sticker was visible on one side.

Walter’s expression changed.

“You don’t even know what that is.”

Karen’s eyes flicked down to the sticker.

Then back to him.

“Then explain it.”

Walter reached out again.

“Give me my property back.”

“No.”

The word was quiet.

Deliberate.

Then Karen hugged the box against her chest.

“Not until you explain why you’re acting like this little box is so important.”

Walter stared at her.

“Because you stole it from me while blocking my chair.”

Karen laughed under her breath.

Then she pointed at his wheelchair.

“Don’t you dare push me around just because you’re in that chair.”

Walter moved forward several inches.

Karen stepped back.

For the first time, the space belonged to him.

She immediately planted herself in front of him again.

Then she raised the box and delivered the sentence that made the entire encounter feel different.

“If everyone has to surrender their space, their time, and their property just because you’re disabled, when exactly do you stop being entitled to special treatment?”

Walter went completely still.

Behind the checkout counter, a scanner beeped.

Neither of them noticed.

But someone else had.

A cashier named Denise had looked up.

And she had seen everything.
