Chapter 5: The Missing Piece

Two weeks later, Thomas received another message from Linda.

The HOA had discovered that the original photographs Denise submitted were missing their timestamps.

That mattered.

The photographs proved that garbage had been on Thomas’s porch.

They did not prove who had put it there.

But there was still one unanswered question.

Why had Denise been so certain that Thomas would be blamed?

Thomas returned to his own records.

He reviewed the doorbell footage from the entire week.

Not just the day of the confrontation.

He found something small.

Three days before the incident, Denise had approached his porch and stood beneath the camera.

She had looked directly at it.

Then she had walked away.

Thomas kept watching.

Later that evening, a delivery driver had left a package.

Denise had returned.

She picked up the package.

Then she realized it wasn’t hers and placed it back down.

Nothing illegal had happened.

But it explained something.

Denise knew exactly where the camera was.

She knew what it could see.

She knew that anything happening on Thomas’s porch could be recorded.

And yet she had still chosen to create the scene.

Thomas brought the clip to Linda.

He expected the board to treat it as another piece of evidence against Denise.

Instead, Linda asked a different question.

“Would you be willing to meet with her?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

He had spent weeks collecting facts because facts felt safer than emotions.

But there was a point when a dispute could no longer be solved by documents alone.

“Yes,” he said.

They met in a small conference room at the community clubhouse.

No audience.

No cameras except the building’s standard security system.

Denise arrived ten minutes late.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then she said, quietly, “My sister had a break-in last year.”

Thomas waited.

“She kept telling everyone she was fine. She wasn’t. She started checking the locks five times a night.”

Denise looked down at her hands.

“I saw your camera and thought it meant you were watching everyone.”

Thomas finally understood why the camera had become so personal to her.

But understanding did not erase responsibility.

“I was protecting my porch,” he said. “You were angry at me. Then you tried to make me responsible for something you did.”

Denise looked at him.

“I know.”

Those two words were the first honest ones she had given him.

Thomas could have demanded an apology.

Instead, he asked for something more practical.

“No more accusations without evidence. No more entering my porch. And if you have a problem with my camera, bring it to the board.”

Denise agreed.

But there was still one matter neither of them had addressed.

The attorney’s letter.

Thomas wanted it withdrawn.

Denise hesitated.

Then she said she would speak to her attorney.

It was not forgiveness.

It was not friendship.

It was a decision to stop making the conflict bigger.

For Thomas, that was enough for the moment.
