Chapter 1: The Doorway

The trash bin slammed into Thomas Reed’s front door hard enough to make the brass mail slot rattle.

Thomas froze halfway through his coffee.

Through the front window, he saw Denise Caldwell standing on his porch, one hand still gripping the bin’s handle. She had already tipped it over. Empty cans, a torn cereal box, and yesterday’s newspaper spilled across the threshold.

Then she looked straight at the small doorbell camera mounted above the frame.

“You think that little camera makes this your property?” she shouted.

Thomas set down his mug.

He was sixty-two, lean from years of walking his old postal route, and had spent the better part of the last year learning to enjoy his house again after his wife, Margaret, died. The front porch had become his quiet place. He read there in the mornings. He watered the two hanging ferns Margaret had planted. He had installed the camera after someone stole a package from his step.

It had never occurred to him that the camera would become the center of a neighborhood war.

Denise grabbed a bucket from beside the porch steps and threw the dirty water across the entrance.

The liquid spread over the boards and mixed with the garbage.

Thomas opened the door halfway.

“Denise! What are you doing?”

She turned toward him.

“I’m teaching you a lesson.”

She kicked a crushed soda can toward the doorway.

Thomas stared at the mess.

“You can’t just destroy someone’s entrance.”

Denise pointed at him, then at the camera.

“You’ve been filming everyone on this street.”

“No,” Thomas said. “It records my porch.”

“That’s not what I heard.”

She turned back toward the lens.

“If you film me, I’ll make sure everyone thinks you did this.”

Then she walked away.

Thomas remained in the doorway, staring at the spilled trash.

He wanted to call the police immediately.

Instead, he looked at the camera.

The little green indicator was blinking.

Thomas went inside, opened the recording history, and watched what had just happened.

There it was.

Every second.

Denise arriving alone.

Denise tipping the bin.

Denise throwing the water.

Denise speaking directly into the camera.

Thomas replayed the final sentence twice.

Then his phone buzzed.

It was a message from the homeowners association.

A complaint had already been filed against him.

The allegation was that Thomas had intentionally dumped garbage and dirty water across his own entrance.

And Denise had attached a photograph.

Thomas recognized the photograph immediately.

It showed his porch covered in trash.

What it didn’t show was who had put it there.

He looked back at the recording.

For the first time, Thomas understood that the camera wasn’t merely watching his front door.

It might be the only thing standing between him and a story someone else had already decided to tell.
