Chapter 2: The Photograph

By eight the next morning, Thomas had cleaned the porch.

He photographed every board before and after washing it. He saved the doorbell footage onto two separate drives and wrote down the exact time Denise had arrived.

He had learned that lesson during thirty-six years with the Postal Service.

When something went wrong, memory was not evidence.

Records were.

The HOA email had come from the association president, Linda Morris, requesting a written response within forty-eight hours. Denise’s complaint claimed that Thomas had repeatedly left trash outside his home, poured dirty water onto the common walkway, and used his camera to intimidate neighbors.

Thomas almost laughed at the last accusation.

He hadn’t spoken to Denise in nearly three weeks.

The real problem had started months earlier.

Denise disliked the camera because her driveway ran along the side of Thomas’s house. She said it pointed toward her property. Thomas had adjusted it downward twice, making sure the lens covered only his porch and the short strip of walkway leading to his door.

She still complained.

Then came the trash.

At first, Thomas thought it was an ordinary misunderstanding. A bin left too close to the curb. A bag blown across the sidewalk. A neighbor’s recycling mixed with his.

But the complaints continued.

And each time, Thomas found himself defending something that hadn’t happened.

That afternoon, he received a visit from his neighbor, Harold Bennett.

Harold was seventy-one and lived three houses away. He had seen Denise leave Thomas’s porch the previous evening.

“I heard yelling,” Harold said.

Thomas showed him the recording.

Harold watched without speaking.

When the final threat played, Harold leaned back.

“She knew that camera was recording.”

“Yes.”

“That matters.”

Thomas nodded.

Harold had one more thing to say.

“Don’t just send the video to the HOA.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Send it to yourself. Keep the original. And don’t edit anything.”

Thomas did exactly that.

The next morning, the HOA meeting was scheduled for six o’clock.

Thomas arrived early.

Denise was already there.

She sat at the long table with a folder in front of her.

She did not look angry.

That bothered Thomas more than if she had.

She looked prepared.

Linda called the meeting to order. Denise spoke first.

She described herself as frightened, harassed, and increasingly uncomfortable in her own neighborhood.

Thomas listened.

She never mentioned the overturned bin.

She never mentioned the bucket.

She never mentioned threatening him.

Instead, she said Thomas had “created an atmosphere of surveillance.”

Then she placed three photographs on the table.

All three showed his porch with garbage on it.

Linda looked toward Thomas.

“Do you have anything you’d like to add?”

Thomas reached into his folder.

“I do.”

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“The complete recording begins before she enters my property.”

Denise’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Thomas saw it.

For the first time since the argument began, she looked uncertain.

Linda took the drive.

The meeting continued.

But the story Denise had brought into the room was no longer the only story available.
