The structural failure did not announce itself with a sudden explosion. It began as a series of sharp, dry snaps within the bedrock, like old timber splitting under a heavy winter snow. The unlined limestone walls of the channel began to shed fine, white powder, the dust hanging in the humid air like a localized fog before being cut down by a sudden wave of hot, chemical-scented steam.

Retreat was no longer an orderly crawl. The protagonist lunged forward, keeping low beneath the whistling plume of steam, the iron pry-bar scraping uselessly against the sweating brickwork. The floor was no longer just silt and water; it was a slick, churning slurry as the rising fluid from the lower fissure began to mix with the municipal drainage lines. The flash beam cut through the vapor in erratic, oily strokes, catching the sudden structural transformation of the entire grid.
The geological surveys retrieved from the surface office had sworn the bedrock here was solid granite, an unyielding vault capable of isolating any industrial byproduct for millennia. It was a lie. The flashlight beam struck a major structural pillar at the junction point—a massive block of reinforced concrete that should have been anchoring the upper substation. It was spiderwebbed with deep, black fissures. Through the cracks, a vitrified pressure sensor, cracked across its ceramic face, was leaking a slow, bubbling froth of dark slime.
The concrete wasn’t holding the mountain up; it was being crushed by it. The entire northern sector was settling, dropping inches at a time as the cavernous chambers below—the very cisterns the operators had filled to maximum capacity—began to collapse under their own compressed volume. The falsified surveys weren’t meant to protect the project from the outside world; they were meant to ensure no one investigated the structural integrity of a zone that had been designed from the outset to be a terminal sinkhole.
A second valve ruptured further up the line, the
