The transition from the dry upper vault to the lower channels forced a shift in posture. But the revised schematics told a completely different story. The outflow channels had been blocked with three-foot-thick plugs of reinforced concrete, and the entire system had been rerouted into a subterranean loop that had no exit point. The network wasn’t designed to drain anything; it was built as a giant, underground cistern meant to hold a specific volume of fluid under constant pressure.
The names listed at the bottom of the manifest matched the names of the engineering crew from the upper substation. Beside each signature was a hand-inked stamp: DEPOSIT CONFIRMED.
The realization was a cold, physical weight. The entire infrastructure above—the switchboards, the generators, the orderly digital logs—was a decorative shell. The network hadn’t failed due to an unexpected accident; the operators had been pumping something down into these sealed chambers until the pressure threatened to rupture the bedrock itself. The altered logs at the substation were a decoy to keep investigators looking at electrical faults while the real cargo sat directly beneath their feet.
A low, sucking sound echoed from the dark mouth of the eastern feeder pipe. The water in the basin did not rise, but its surface began to vibrate, tiny concentric rings spreading outward from the center of the pool until they lapped against the leather case.
The air grew perceptibly colder within the span of three breaths. The limestone sweat on the ceiling began to freeze into tiny, milky beads, and the flashlight beam grew dim, the batteries struggling against a sudden, localized drop in temperature.
The protagonist did not retreat. A gloved hand reached down into the locker, retrieving a secondary bundle from beneath the ledger—a small, heavy cylinder wrapped in lead foil. It felt remarkably heavy for its size, cold enough to ache through the thick leather of the gloves.
The cylinder was an inspection core, a physical sample taken from the deep vault before the final seal had been poured. The tunnel ahead narrowed, the brickwork giving way to raw, unlined limestone where the water disappeared into a natural fissure.
