Chapter 1: The Ramp

“HEY! STOP RIGHT THERE! WHO SAID YOU COULD USE THIS RAMP?”

Daniel Brooks stopped his wheelchair.

The woman’s palm was raised inches from his face. She stood beside the clearly marked accessible ramp leading to the automatic glass doors of the shopping center store, staring at him as if she had the authority to decide who could pass.

She was in her early sixties, heavyset, with short, tightly curled charcoal-black hair streaked with silver. A dark emerald blouse showed beneath a crooked mustard cardigan, and a faded teal handbag hung from her shoulder.

Daniel glanced toward the blue accessibility sign and then back at her.

“It’s an accessible entrance,” he said. “Please move aside.”

“I’m the one standing here!” she snapped. “You don’t just roll up and decide you get priority!”

Daniel kept his hands on the wheels.

“You’re standing beside the ramp. You don’t own it.”

Her arms folded across her chest.

“Don’t tell me what I can do! Everyone wants special treatment these days!”

Daniel felt his frustration rising, but he kept his voice controlled.

He had come to the store for a replacement part for medical equipment at home. It should have been an ordinary errand. Instead, a stranger was demanding that he justify using an entrance specifically designed to remain accessible.

The woman stepped farther to the side, leaving a clear path.

Daniel moved forward.

She didn’t stop him physically. She never touched his wheelchair or blocked its wheels. But as he passed, he heard the sharp click of a phone camera.

He looked back.

She had photographed him.

That changed the situation.

Daniel could have kept going. He could have completed his errand and left. But the photograph meant the encounter might no longer remain an unpleasant moment between two strangers.

The woman had created a record of the confrontation from her own perspective.

Daniel turned toward customer service.

He wanted the store to know what had happened before someone else’s version became the only version anyone heard.

Behind him, the woman followed.
