Chapter 4: The Question She Couldn’t Avoid

The woman arrived with her adult daughter.

Daniel happened to be near the entrance when they walked in.

The woman pointed toward the ramp.

“This is where they treated me like I didn’t matter.”

Her daughter looked at the ramp, then at the store entrance.

“What happened?”

Her mother immediately began explaining that Daniel had ignored her and that the employees had taken his side.

Daniel stayed quiet.

Mark came from the office.

The daughter noticed the security camera above the entrance.

“Did they record it?”

“Yes,” Mark said.

Her mother stiffened.

“That’s not relevant.”

Her daughter looked at her.

“What does the video show?”

Mark didn’t play it for everyone. He simply described what it established.

The woman had approached Daniel.

She had told him he needed permission.

Daniel had asked her to move.

She had argued.

An employee had then intervened and instructed her to keep the access path clear.

Her daughter listened without interrupting.

Then she looked at her mother.

“Did you really tell him he needed your permission?”

The woman didn’t answer.

Daniel watched her expression change.

Until that moment, she had been able to describe herself as someone demanding ordinary consideration. But the specific question exposed the difference between consideration and control.

Finally, she said, “I just think people should have consideration for everybody.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I agree.”

She turned toward him.

“But consideration can’t mean deciding who gets to enter,” he said.

Her daughter lowered her gaze.

Mark spoke calmly.

“You’re welcome to shop here. But you cannot interfere with customers’ access to the entrance.”

The woman gathered her handbag.

No one forced her out.

No one insulted her.

She simply had to choose whether to accept the boundary.

She walked toward the doors.

Then she turned back.

Her face was flushed with frustration.

“Why does everybody get to use this space except me?”

Daniel said nothing.

The answer was visible behind her.

The ramp was still there.

It had never belonged to her.
