Chapter 1: The Fire Truck Had Nowhere to Go

The fire truck was already coming.

Its red lights flashed across the neat suburban houses as the siren echoed between the trees. A few residents stepped out onto their porches, trying to understand what emergency had brought a fire engine into their quiet little subdivision.

Then everyone saw the problem.

Two large wheeled trash bins sat directly across the narrow residential road.

And standing behind them was Margaret Collins.

At sixty-two, Margaret was known for having an opinion about almost everything that happened on the street. She had complained about basketball hoops left too close to driveways, children riding bicycles after dark, packages being left on front porches, and homeowners placing their garbage cans at the curb too early.

But this was different.

She had deliberately rolled the bins farther into the roadway.

The fire truck slowed sharply behind them.

Margaret planted both feet and raised one hand toward the driver.

“Stop!”

The truck stopped.

At that exact moment, Daniel Harper came running from his driveway.

Daniel was sixty-three, tall and lean, with silver-gray hair and a neatly trimmed mustache. He had been inside when he heard the siren. When he stepped outside and saw Margaret blocking the road, disbelief had briefly stopped him in his tracks.

Then he saw the fire truck.

He hurried toward her.

“Move the bins.”

Margaret turned sharply.

“You are NOT blocking my street with that truck!”

Daniel stared at her.

“It’s a fire truck.”

“I know what it is.”

“Then move the damn bin.”

Daniel grabbed one of the handles.

Margaret grabbed the other.

For a moment, neither moved.

The plastic wheels rattled violently against the pavement as they pulled in opposite directions.

Daniel’s boots slipped slightly.

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Then they can wait!”

Daniel looked past her.

The fire truck’s emergency lights continued flashing.

Somewhere nearby, another resident was calling out that someone needed help.

Daniel pulled harder.

The first bin finally rolled toward the curb.

Margaret immediately yanked it back.

Daniel’s expression changed.

He had expected an argument.

He had not expected her to physically fight him over a trash can while a fire truck waited behind them.

“Margaret,” he said, his voice suddenly low, “what are you doing?”

She pulled the bin closer to herself.

“I’m protecting our street.”

“From a fire truck?”

Before she could answer, the truck sounded its horn.

Margaret flinched.

For half a second, uncertainty crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

Daniel grabbed the bin again.

This time he forced it onto the grass.

One lane opened.

The fire truck began creeping forward.

Daniel exhaled.

Then he heard wheels rolling behind him.

He turned.

Margaret had seized the second bin.

She dragged it across the opening.

The gap disappeared again.

The fire truck stopped.

Daniel looked at her as though he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Margaret raised her chin.

“Nobody invited that truck through here.”

The siren screamed behind them.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You’re holding up an emergency truck because you want control of the road?”

Margaret’s hands tightened around the handle.

“If your house is the one burning,” she said coldly, “maybe then you’ll learn why I don’t move for anybody.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked beyond her.

The fire truck was only a few yards away.

And whatever emergency had brought it there was still happening.
