CHAPTER 1: THE DISCARDED CYLINDER

The shrill whine of hardened steel biting into composite wood ripped the late-afternoon suburban silence in half.

I paused on the second step of my own porch, the brown paper grocery bag sagging against my ribs. A pair of familiar, pristine white slip-ons blocked the welcome mat. Standing wedged between the door leaf and the trim was Karen Vance, her mint-green cardigan pinned shut against the October draft, one polished thumbnail steadying a battery-powered compact drill against the upper screw of a brand-new digital deadbolt.

At her feet lay the brass guts of my old lock—the five-pin cylinder I had turned every night for seven years—tossed into the dry potting soil beside a wilting hydrangea.

“Drop the bit, Karen.”

My voice didn’t rise; it dropped into the low, gravelly register I usually reserved for aggressive dogs. The brass key tucked between my knuckles bit cold into the meat of my palm.

The drill gave one last, torque-limited rattle—clack-clack-clack—before she snapped the trigger release. She didn’t flinch. She let the tool’s weight dangle from her wrist by its lanyard, turning her torso just enough to close the remaining daylight between the door and the jamb. Her pale eyes flicked over my olive utility jacket, cataloging the posture, the groceries, the single key dangling from my index finger like an obsolete token.

“Your key doesn’t work here anymore, Claire,” she said. Her lips were thinly coated in matte rose, parting just enough to let the words cut.

“Step off my porch before I take that battery pack out of your hand.” I dropped the grocery sack onto the porch floor. A jar of canned tomatoes settled against the siding with a dull thud. I took the remaining step, closing the distance until I could smell the synthetic lavender of her laundry detergent masking the sharp, ozone tang of freshly drilled metal. “You’re trespassing. You drilled out private property.”

“A safety upgrade,” she replied smoothly, her spine straightening to meet my height. “Authorized by the neighborhood council under Article Four. The property line has a structural violation pending.”

“There is no council authority for entry doors. Move.”

I reached past her shoulder, fingers stretching toward the dark, brushed-metal housing of the new keypad to examine the latch.

Karen moved faster than a fifty-eight-year-old retired actuary had any right to. Her left palm slammed flat against the rear edge of the lock assembly, pressing hard against the raw wood where the finish had been chiseled away. Her knuckles blanched white. The drill in her right hand swung outward slightly, acting as a rigid, silent barricade across the strike plate.

The smug certainty in her mouth vanished, swallowed by a twitch in the jawline. A tiny bead of sweat caught in the line beside her nose.

She wasn’t guarding the lock. She was pinning something against the timber behind it.

Beneath the flat pad of her thumb, poking out barely a millimeter past the casing, sat a thin strip of black vulcanized tape. Protruding through the seam was a thread-fine, braided copper splice running directly into the drilled mortise—wired backward, feeding into the interior wall cavity rather than the battery compartment.

“Step back, Claire,” she whispered, her voice tightening like a wet rope. “You have no idea what you’re pulling on.”

Down on the walkway, a clean black sedan with unmarked municipal plates pulled silently to the curb, its engine idling without headlights.
