CHAPTER 4: THE PERIMETER STANDOFF

The chain-link fence vibrated under Arthur’s hand, a low, cold hum that traveled up his arm and settled directly behind his ribs. The zinc coating on the wire was rough, corroded by decades of salt-heavy air and the sulfurous exhaust of the base motor pool. It was four in the morning. The sky had no color, just a thick, bruised density that pressed down on the sharp gravel of the perimeter road, keeping the smell of wet oil and dead weeds close to the frozen earth.

Two hundred yards down the lane, the main gate booth sat beneath a single unshielded sodium bulb. The amber light caught the wet hoods of three commercial cargo trucks, their engines idling in a synchronized, subterranean growl that vibrated through the soles of Arthur’s boots. They weren’t military transports. There were no white tactical serials painted on the bumpers, no unit stencils on the tailgates—only the flat, desaturated green of unbranded industrial fleet vehicles.

Arthur adjusted his grip on the rusted iron key in his jacket pocket, his thumb tracking the raised letters 7-B like a blind man reading a headstone. The paperwork Clara had given him at the diner—the decoy charge of historical fuel theft—lay folded beneath his belt, stiff and useless against the reality of the logistics line moving through the dark. The officer hadn’t wanted to hide a thirty-year-old accounting error. He was clearing the board so these trucks could run through the blind spots of the old ordnance tunnels without an aging quartermaster logging the axle weights.

A car door slammed near the guard shack. The sharp, double click of a high-grade security holster unlatching cut through the diesel rumble.

“Step back from the wire, Arthur,” a voice called out.
