Chapter 3: The Repair Bill
The next morning, Megan called a local glass company.
The technician inspected the door and told her the panel couldn’t simply be patched.
The frame had been damaged too.
The repair would cost considerably more than Megan had expected.
She thanked him and asked for a written estimate.
Then she called her homeowners insurance company.
By noon, the paperwork had begun.
Megan hated every minute of it.
She had never enjoyed conflict.
She was the sort of person who returned shopping carts, paid bills early, and avoided unnecessary arguments with neighbors.
Karen seemed to operate by a different philosophy.
That afternoon, Megan found a handwritten note tucked beneath her doormat.
There was no greeting.
It simply said that Megan had “created this situation” and should “stop making threats.”
Megan photographed it.
Then she placed it in an envelope.
She did not throw it away.
She didn’t know whether it would matter later.
That evening, Emily came over.
She stood in the doorway and looked at the broken panel.
Her expression softened.
“You okay?”
Megan nodded.
“I’m more tired than angry.”
Emily hugged her.
For several minutes, neither woman said anything.
Then Emily noticed something on the driveway.
A small metal piece lay near the porch steps.
She picked it up.
It was part of the umbrella stand.
“Was this here yesterday?”
Megan shook her head.
“I don’t think so.”
Emily examined it.
“Mom, the camera might have captured more than just the door.”
They checked.
The security camera had recorded continuously.
The footage showed Karen arriving with a folded document in her hand.
Emily zoomed in.
The image wasn’t clear enough to read the document, but its existence raised another question.
Why had Karen brought paperwork to a dispute over flowerpots?
They watched further.
Before the argument escalated, Karen had tried to place the document on Megan’s porch table.
Megan had refused to discuss anything until she understood what it was.
Karen had become angry.
Then came the accident.
Emily paused the recording.
“Do you know what this might be?”
“No.”
The next morning, Megan learned the answer.
Karen had filed a complaint with the neighborhood association.
She claimed Megan had violated community landscaping rules and damaged shared property during an argument.
Megan read the complaint twice.
There was one major problem.
The section Karen claimed Megan had violated didn’t apply to Megan’s property.
It applied to a completely different section of the neighborhood.
Megan called the association office.
The manager, Linda Perez, apologized for the confusion.
Then she said something that surprised Megan.
“Karen has made several complaints recently.”
“About me?”
“No. About other residents.”
Linda explained that Karen had become increasingly involved in minor disputes around the neighborhood.
Trash cans.
Parking.
Lawn decorations.
Guests.
A delivery truck that had briefly blocked a driveway.
None of the complaints alone was serious.
But there was a pattern.
Karen seemed determined to control things that weren’t hers to control.
Megan listened quietly.
Then Linda asked whether Megan had security footage.
“Yes.”
“Keep the original.”
Megan promised she would.
That evening, another envelope appeared at her door.
This one came from the association.
Inside was a notice for a formal hearing.
Megan stared at the date.
Karen had managed to turn a broken door into an official dispute.
But Megan had something Karen didn’t know she possessed.

And the hearing would give both women a chance to tell their side.
