Chapter 1: The Shattered Door
The front door was still broken when Karen pointed at it and shouted.
“You broke it—and don’t you dare pretend you didn’t!”
Megan Carter stood beside the damaged doorway, one white work glove still gripping the edge of the frame. Tiny pieces of safety glass glittered across the porch floor and caught the afternoon sunlight.
For a second, Megan simply stared at Karen.
Karen stood at the bottom of the porch steps in a bright red blouse covered in enormous yellow-and-orange flowers, hot-pink pants, white sneakers, an orange cardigan, and oversized colorful earrings. Her outfit was impossible to ignore.
So was her anger.
Megan had spent twenty years working in home renovation, and even after all those years, the sight of her own front door shattered across the porch made her stomach tighten.
“You smashed my door, Karen,” Megan said. “I watched you do it.”
Karen stepped closer.
“Then prove it!”
Her voice carried across the quiet suburban street.
“You think anybody’s going to believe you?”
Megan glanced toward the damaged doorway.
She didn’t need to argue.
She knew what had happened.
Less than ten minutes earlier, Karen had arrived without warning. She had been angry about a disagreement concerning a shared strip of landscaping between their properties. Karen had insisted that Megan remove several flowerpots that she claimed were too close to the property line.
Megan had refused.
The argument had grown louder.
Then Karen had grabbed the porch umbrella stand while gesturing angrily. The metal base had struck the glass panel beside the front door.
The glass had exploded.
Karen had stared at the damage for barely a second before turning the accusation around.
Now she was acting as though Megan had somehow destroyed her own entrance.
Megan took one step forward.
“The entire porch camera recorded everything.”
Karen stopped.
It lasted less than a second.
But Megan saw it.
The brief flicker in Karen’s eyes.
Then the anger returned.
“Then show me the footage!”
Megan didn’t answer immediately.
She looked toward the small security camera mounted beneath the porch eave.
It had been installed six months earlier after Megan’s daughter, Emily, had encouraged her mother to take home security more seriously.
Megan had almost forgotten about it.
Karen hadn’t.
Or perhaps she simply hadn’t noticed it.
Either way, the camera had been running.
Karen pointed directly toward Megan.
“Go ahead. Call the police. Let’s see who they believe!”
The words hung in the air.
Megan’s neighbor across the street slowly pulled his curtains aside.
A car passing the house reduced its speed.
Karen seemed to realize that people were watching.
Instead of stepping back, she folded her arms.
She looked almost satisfied.
Megan reached for her phone.
She wasn’t going to win this by shouting.
She wasn’t going to match Karen’s anger.
And she wasn’t going to let someone rewrite what had happened simply because they were louder.
“I think,” Megan said quietly, “we’re about to find out exactly what happened.”
Karen’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Not yet.
But uncertainty.
Megan opened the security app.
The recording was waiting.
And the first frame showed Karen walking toward the porch.
