Chapter 3: A Neighborhood Starts Asking Questions

By Friday, everyone seemed to know something had happened.

Not the truth.

Just enough of it to create rumors.

Karen told people Frank had tried to drive his mobility cart through an area that was “temporarily restricted.”

Frank told nobody anything.

That made the rumors worse.

At the weekly coffee gathering in the clubhouse, two neighbors quietly asked him what was going on.

Frank smiled.

“I don’t know yet.”

That was the honest answer.

But one person did know something.

Walter Greene.

Walter was eighty-two and had lived in the neighborhood almost as long as Frank. He had been a volunteer on the original landscaping committee.

When Frank mentioned the hatch, Walter nearly dropped his coffee.

“That thing is still there?”

Frank looked at him.

“You know it?”

Walter nodded slowly.

“I remember the construction.”

“What is it?”

“Drainage control. Maybe irrigation too. There were several access points.”

“Why would Karen lock it?”

Walter shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then he remembered something.

“Wait.”

He pulled an old smartphone from his pocket.

“I took pictures when they were building this place.”

He scrolled through hundreds of photographs.

Finally, he stopped.

There it was.

The same stretch of path.

The same low retaining wall.

But there was no planter.

And the hatch was clearly visible.

Beside it stood a small sign.

AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY — COMMUNITY MAINTENANCE.

Frank stared at the photograph.

“That’s not there anymore.”

Walter zoomed in.

The sign had disappeared.

“So did the second marker,” he said.

“What second marker?”

Walter pointed.

A small post stood about six feet from the hatch.

Frank had never noticed it.

“Boundary marker,” Walter said. “I think.”

That afternoon, Linda Harris called an emergency HOA board meeting.

Frank attended.

So did Karen.

She arrived carrying her familiar folder.

She placed it on the table with a heavy slap.

“This is being blown completely out of proportion,” she said.

Linda remained calm.

“We’re trying to establish why a community access hatch has been privately locked.”

Karen’s eyes shifted toward Frank.

“I locked nothing.”

Linda raised an eyebrow.

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

Frank said nothing.

Karen turned toward him.

“You’ve been spreading accusations.”

“I’ve been asking questions.”

“You’ve caused unnecessary concern.”

“I took pictures.”

Karen’s face hardened.

Linda opened a file.

“There is another issue.”

She removed an old maintenance report.

“The hatch is listed as a required access point for drainage inspection.”

Karen leaned forward.

“That report is thirty years old.”

“Correct.”

“So it’s obsolete.”

Linda shook her head.

“Not according to the county maintenance records.”

The room became quiet.

Then Linda produced another document.

It showed a maintenance inspection from only eighteen months earlier.

The hatch was still listed.

And there was a handwritten note beside it.

Access obstructed. Landscaping moved. Follow-up required.

Frank looked at Karen.

She didn’t look back.

The board decided the planter would have to be removed until the matter was resolved.

Karen objected loudly.

But this time, the decision wasn’t hers to control.

As the meeting ended, Frank noticed something strange.

Karen left before everyone else.

And instead of going home, she walked directly toward the lower end of the neighborhood.

Toward the old drainage channel.

Frank watched from the clubhouse window.

Something about her destination bothered him.

The hatch wasn’t the only thing she had been trying to keep people away from.
