Chapter 5: The Reversal Daniel Never Expected
The utility company eventually calculated that Daniel had been billed for electricity consumed through the unauthorized connection.
The amount was significant.
But not as significant as Daniel expected.
Karen had not been stealing power for years.
She had started several months earlier.
Her business had grown unexpectedly.
She had been preparing specialty meals for people in the area, storing ingredients in commercial refrigeration equipment and running additional cooling systems.
At first, she had used her own electricity.
Then her monthly bills increased.
Instead of reducing the operation, she looked for another solution.
According to the documentation reviewed by the property manager, she had eventually routed power from Daniel’s outdoor receptacle.
It had been easy to do because the homes were close together.
She apparently convinced herself that the extra electricity would be temporary.
Then temporary became routine.
And routine became something she felt entitled to.
But there was one part of the story Daniel hadn’t known.
Karen wasn’t making much money from the business.
She had been helping her adult son, Michael, who had recently lost his job.
The refrigeration equipment was being used partly to store food for the small catering operation he was trying to build.
When Daniel learned this, his anger became complicated.
He still believed what Karen had done was wrong.
But he also understood desperation in a way he hadn’t before.
He remembered the years after his own retirement.
The fear of becoming financially dependent.
The quiet embarrassment of admitting that things weren’t going as planned.
Still, compassion didn’t erase boundaries.
Daniel told Karen that he would cooperate with the utility company and property manager, but he expected the unauthorized charges to be addressed.
Karen agreed.
There was no dramatic apology.
No tearful confession.
Just a long silence.
Finally, she said, “I thought if I stopped before anyone noticed, it wouldn’t become a problem.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That’s usually how problems become bigger.”
She lowered her eyes.
For the first time since the confrontation, Karen didn’t argue.
The property manager required her to remove the unauthorized setup and disclose the business activity.
The utility company corrected the billing once the investigation was complete.
Daniel’s account was adjusted.
The immediate dispute was over.
But one question remained.
Would Karen change?
