Chapter 4: The Night Everything Went Dark

Three nights later, the neighborhood lost power.

It happened at 11:17 p.m.

Daniel was reading in the living room when the lights went out.

The refrigerator stopped humming.

The house became completely silent.

Then, from outside, came a loud electrical pop.

Daniel grabbed a flashlight.

Across the street, porch lights went dark one by one.

Someone shouted from a neighboring house.

Daniel stepped outside.

Karen’s backyard was strangely illuminated.

A portable generator had started.

But the large equipment behind her fence was still running.

Daniel could hear the motors.

He called the utility company.

Within forty minutes, a crew arrived.

They found a problem affecting several houses.

A technician inspected the neighborhood equipment while another checked the service connections.

Daniel stood at the edge of his property.

Karen came outside.

She looked furious.

“This is ridiculous,” she complained.

Nobody answered her.

Then the utility technician found something.

The temporary cable was no longer visible.

But the equipment inside Karen’s yard was drawing power from somewhere.

The technician asked Karen to explain the setup.

She refused.

Mr. Collins arrived.

He told her that she needed to cooperate with the utility investigation.

Karen’s anger quickly turned toward Daniel.

“You started this.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. The cable started this.”

“You could have talked to me.”

“I did.”

“You embarrassed me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I didn’t tell anyone what I thought you were doing. I showed them what I saw.”

That distinction mattered.

The utility crew eventually identified the problem.

Karen’s backyard operation had been drawing substantial electricity from a temporary connection that had been routed through Daniel’s outdoor receptacle.

She had removed the visible cable before the crew arrived, but the setup left enough evidence to establish what had happened.

The utility company disconnected the unauthorized connection.

The machines went silent.

For the first time in days, Karen’s backyard was completely quiet.

But the investigation wasn’t finished.

The technician told Daniel that the unusual consumption had probably been occurring for several weeks.

Possibly longer.

Daniel thought about his rising bills.

Then about Linda.

She had always noticed everything.

A higher bill.

A strange noise.

A light left on.

Daniel had ignored the numbers because he assumed the increase came from summer heat.

Now he realized something uncomfortable.

Sometimes the warning isn’t hidden.

Sometimes it is sitting on your kitchen table in plain sight.
