Chapter 3: The Part She Had Not Seen

The answer became clear when Meredith saw the second firefighter emerge from the hospital.

He stopped briefly beside the first.

The two men exchanged information, then looked back toward the building.

Their faces were serious.

Meredith heard only fragments of their conversation, but she understood enough.

The fire response was taking place around a hospital area where patients and staff were still present.

The hose had been positioned where it was because the crew needed access to that part of the building.

It had not been carelessly left across her path.

It had been placed there for a reason.

Meredith looked down at the pavement.

The damaged section was being removed.

A replacement line was already being positioned.

Nobody was making a speech about what she had done.

Nobody needed to.

The firefighters were simply fixing it and continuing.

That somehow made her feel worse.

She approached the first firefighter when he came back toward the engine.

“Was it really necessary for the hose to be there?”

“Yes.”

“Because of the fire?”

“Because of where we were working.”

Meredith nodded.

She glanced toward the hospital entrance.

“So if I’d moved it myself…”

“You shouldn’t have touched it.”

“I know.”

The firefighter looked at her.

She had expected anger.

Instead, his voice remained controlled.

“We told you to stay behind the barrier because we needed the space clear.”

Meredith looked at the barrier.

It suddenly seemed much larger than it had before.

She had treated it as an inconvenience.

Now she understood that it marked the difference between being part of the emergency response and being in its way.

The firefighter turned back toward his crew.

Meredith remained still.

She could have left.

She could have walked away and told herself that nobody had been hurt.

But she had seen the firefighters replace the hose.

She had seen the hospital operation continue.

And she knew the consequences could not be measured only by whether anyone had been injured.

She looked at the hose one more time.

Then she quietly stepped farther away from the emergency area.
