Chapter 6: The Path That Wasn’t Hers

By the time the emergency operation began winding down, the daylight had softened over the hospital.

Meredith stood outside the cleared area and watched firefighters gather their equipment.

The hose she had damaged was gone.

A replacement had done its job.

The hospital entrance was returning to its normal rhythm.

Meredith approached the firefighter one last time.

“I understand something now,” she said.

He waited.

“I kept thinking the hose was blocking my path.”

She looked toward the hospital doors.

“It wasn’t my path.”

The firefighter nodded.

Meredith continued.

“It was your work area. I was the one who entered it.”

He gave her a small, tired smile.

“That’s a better way to look at it.”

She nodded.

There was no dramatic speech.

No argument left to win.

No excuse left to make.

Meredith looked once more at the pavement where she had demanded that the hose be moved.

A few hours earlier, she had believed her inconvenience entitled her to interfere.

Now she understood that some boundaries existed because other people’s safety had to come first.

She turned toward the sidewalk.

This time, she followed the path that had been left open for her.

The firefighters returned to their work.

The hospital remained standing.

And Meredith walked away knowing that the most important thing she had moved that day was not the hose.

It was herself.
