Chapter 7: The Second Survey

The county ordered a formal survey.

This time, there would be no assumptions.

Survey stakes were placed along the true boundary.

The results confirmed what George had said.

The fence was several feet inside Mara’s property for part of its length.

That discovery surprised her.

She had lived behind that fence for more than a decade believing it marked her land.

The revelation could have become another source of conflict.

Instead, Mara chose a different path.

She didn’t demand that Harold move the fence.

She didn’t want a feud with her neighbor.

She wanted clear rules.

Harold agreed to repair the damage caused by the excavation.

He also agreed that any future work involving the easement would be disclosed to Mara beforehand.

The county required revised plans for the drainage work.

The retaining wall was redesigned.

Daniel was hired to complete the legitimate repairs under the new plan.

This time, Mara knew exactly where he would be digging.

She even brought him coffee one morning.

He laughed when he saw her approaching.

“Still checking my measurements?”

Mara smiled.

“Every single one.”

It was the first joke between them.

The tension that had existed between the fence posts began to fade.

But Mara wasn’t ready to forget what had happened.

She had learned something important.

A property line wasn’t merely a line on paper.

It represented responsibility.

Access.

Privacy.

And trust.

The fence had given her a false sense of certainty.

The paperwork had given Harold a false sense of authority.

And Daniel had been caught in between.

Now everyone knew where the lines really were.
