Chapter 6: The Water Nobody Saw

The county inspector arrived the next week.

By then, several inches of rain had fallen.

That rain revealed what the dry soil had hidden.

Water began pooling in the trench.

Then it disappeared beneath the old drainage line.

The inspector followed the system.

The line ran beneath the neighboring property, crossed the easement, and continued toward a stormwater channel behind the houses.

It had been there for decades.

More importantly, it protected several homes from flooding.

Mara stood silently as the inspector explained.

Had Daniel continued working that afternoon, the consequences could have been severe.

Water might have backed up during the next storm.

Mara’s foundation could have been affected.

So could several neighboring yards.

Daniel looked sick.

He had been following instructions.

But he knew how close he had come to causing serious damage.

Harold’s explanation changed again.

He claimed he had been unaware of the full drainage system.

The county inspector didn’t accuse him of deliberately hiding it.

But the paperwork told a different story.

The original property records clearly referenced the drainage easement.

Harold’s contractor packet did not.

Someone had simplified the information.

And that omission had nearly caused an expensive disaster.

For Mara, the revelation brought mixed emotions.

She had been angry at Daniel.

She had suspected him of trespassing.

She had stood behind the fence ready to fight.

Now she realized he had been another person caught between a property owner’s instructions and the facts buried in old records.

Daniel apologized.

Mara accepted.

Neither made a dramatic speech.

They didn’t need to.

Sometimes fairness meant admitting that the person standing in front of you wasn’t the person who had caused the problem.
