Chapter 7: The Real Record

A week later, Linda stood beneath the camera again.

This time there was no bat.

No shouting.

No audience.

David was beside her, showing her the new privacy settings.

The camera remained pointed toward the driveway and street.

The adjustment was small, but it gave Linda back a portion of the privacy she had been fighting for.

She looked at the lens.

“I still don’t like it.”

David smiled.

“You don’t have to.”

Linda considered that.

That was the strange thing about compromise.

Nobody had to love it.

They only had to be able to live with it.

The police investigation eventually established that the dark sedan was connected to someone who had been checking houses in the neighborhood before several thefts. Linda had not imagined the vehicle.

But neither had the camera been spying on her.

Both truths could exist at the same time.

The neighborhood changed after that.

People stopped treating Linda as the woman from the viral video.

They began treating her as the widow who had been scared, angry, and wrong about one important thing.

She also began admitting when she was wrong.

That may have been the hardest change of all.

One Saturday afternoon, Margaret organized a block barbecue.

Linda almost refused.

Then she remembered how lonely her house had felt after Tom died.

So she went.

David handed her a plate.

Someone joked about the foam bat.

Linda rolled her eyes.

“It’s in the garage.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Linda.

Later, as the sun dropped behind the rooftops, she walked home alone.

She passed beneath the security camera.

For half a second, she looked up.

The old anger was gone.

She raised one hand toward the lens.

Not a threat.

Not a demand.

A wave.

Inside the house, David’s camera recorded the moment and stored it with the rest.

A woman walking home.

A neighbor passing beneath a lens.

A quiet afternoon in an ordinary American neighborhood.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing worth sharing.

And that, Linda realized, was exactly what she had wanted all along.

Not to disappear.

Not to control who could see her.

Just to feel safe enough to live her life without believing every pair of eyes was against her.
