Chapter 2: The Footage

By six o’clock, the street had changed.

Neighbors who normally waved from driveways were standing in small groups along the sidewalk. Nobody wanted to be the first to say what everyone was thinking.

David did not show the footage immediately.

He first checked the camera, then the mounting bracket, then the recording system inside the house.

Everything was intact.

The real camera had captured Linda approaching, shouting, striking the prop three times, celebrating afterward, and then discovering the functioning camera above her.

The image was unusually clear.

Her face.

The foam bat.

The fallen pieces.

Her final declaration.

There was no ambiguity about what had happened.

But David also knew that footage could turn a neighborhood dispute into something uglier if people treated it like entertainment.

He called his sister, Rebecca, who lived nearby and worked as a paralegal. She came over, watched the recording once, and shook her head.

“Don’t send this around,” she said. “Not yet.”

David nodded.

Linda, meanwhile, had gone home.

For nearly an hour, the street quieted.

Then her front door opened again.

She walked toward David’s house without the bat.

That alone made him wary.

“I want that camera removed,” she said.

“It’s on private property.”

“I can see it from my yard.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s yours.”

Linda folded her arms.

She said she had felt watched for months. She complained about the camera’s position, the angle of the lens, and the feeling that someone was monitoring every time she walked outside.

David listened.

For the first time that evening, he heard something beneath the anger.

Fear.

Not fear of the camera itself.

Fear of being observed.

He told her he would be willing to discuss privacy boundaries, but he would not pretend she had not just attacked a piece of equipment.

Linda’s expression hardened again.

“I didn’t hurt anything.”

“That part is true,” David said. “The prop was designed to break.”

She looked startled.

Then embarrassed.

Then angry that she had been embarrassed.

“What exactly are you trying to prove?”

David answered quietly.

“Nothing. I’m trying to figure out what happened before it gets worse.”

Linda turned and walked away.

David watched her disappear through her front door.

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed.

Someone had posted in the neighborhood group.

The video was already circulating.
