Chapter 5: What the Camera Saw

That evening, David and Rebecca reviewed the recording with the homeowner whose garage had been entered.

The footage showed a pickup truck moving down the street shortly after midnight.

The plate was partially visible.

It was enough to give police a lead.

Nobody celebrated.

For Linda, however, the discovery landed differently.

The camera she had wanted destroyed might actually make the neighborhood safer.

The next morning she came to David’s house carrying a paper grocery bag.

Inside was the foam bat.

She set it on his porch.

“I don’t want this anymore.”

David almost smiled.

“You could keep it.”

“No.”

She looked at the camera above him.

“I’ve made enough trouble with that thing.”

He told her about the garage.

She listened.

Then she asked whether her own footage from the night she had been frightened by the dark sedan could be checked again.

They searched.

This time, they found something.

The same dark sedan appeared on one of the older recordings.

It stopped at the curb.

A man stepped out.

He walked toward Linda’s mailbox.

Then he noticed the camera.

He returned to the vehicle.

The sedan drove away.

The footage did not identify him.

But it established that someone had indeed approached her property late at night.

Linda’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew I wasn’t completely imagining it.”

“No,” David said. “You weren’t.”

She nodded.

Then he added, gently, “But the camera wasn’t the person watching you.”

Linda looked up at him.

The distinction finally reached her.

Her fear had found an object to blame.

The object had never been the real threat.

That afternoon, Linda agreed to let David adjust the camera angle slightly so it covered less of the sidewalk directly outside her property while still protecting the driveway.

It was a compromise.

Not a victory.

For the first time, both of them understood that distinction.

But the neighborhood group was still discussing the viral video.

And one comment had appeared beneath it from an unfamiliar account.

I know that woman.

David read the comment twice.

Then another appeared.

She isn’t telling you everything.
