Chapter 4: The Morning Nobody Expected
The next morning, Evan returned to the site.
He wasn’t required to.
He came anyway.
He brought coffee for the crew.
Mike was already there.
The two men exchanged an awkward nod.
No apology speech followed.
Neither needed one.
Evan handed Mike a cup.
“Black?”
Mike raised an eyebrow.
“You remembered?”
“My father drank it that way.”
Mike accepted the cup.
For a moment, the construction site felt almost ordinary.
Then Dana called everyone over.
The utility survey had produced an unexpected result.
The original plans were outdated.
A service line shown several feet away from the marked excavation zone was actually closer than expected.
That meant the crew had been working from information that was incomplete.
Mike studied the updated map.
His expression became serious.
“We would’ve found it eventually.”
Dana nodded.
“But maybe not before the machine got close.”
Evan listened.
The realization unsettled him.
Yesterday’s confrontation hadn’t been about a stubborn worker refusing to move his car.
It had been about incomplete information, poor communication, and people assuming someone else had handled the problem.
That was how accidents happened.
Not always through one reckless decision.
Sometimes through a chain of ordinary mistakes.
Mike asked Dana whether the excavation should be delayed.
She said the schedule would have to change.
That meant additional costs.
Deliveries would need to be rescheduled.
A crew would lose a day’s work.
Someone would almost certainly complain.
Evan expected Mike to be frustrated.
Instead, the older man simply said, “Better one lost day than one injured person.”
Those words reminded Evan of his father.
His father had spent forty years repairing machines and had always said the same thing in different ways:
A job can be delayed.
A person cannot be replaced.
Evan looked at Mike.
“You were right to stop me.”
Mike gave a small nod.
“And you were right to ask why the entrance was open.”
It wasn’t forgiveness exactly.
It was something better.
Recognition.
Both men had been wrong about something.
And both had been right about something.
The difference was that neither had to pretend otherwise.
But the story still wasn’t finished.
Because Dana had discovered one more problem.
Someone had signed off on the site inspection that morning.
The inspection report stated that all restricted access points were properly secured.
They weren’t.
And now the company had to determine how that report had been approved.
