Chapter 2: The Line Beneath the Ground
Evan followed Mike’s gaze.
The excavator hadn’t been digging randomly.
A series of faded orange markings crossed the ground near the sports car. Some were almost invisible beneath dust and tire tracks. A few small survey flags stood along the edge of the work area.
Evan hadn’t noticed them when he drove in.
Mike had.
He had noticed every one.
The excavation crew was preparing to expose an old underground utility corridor before beginning the next phase of the project. The location had been marked that morning, but one of the temporary barriers had been knocked down sometime during the previous shift.
That missing barrier had created the problem.
Evan had entered through an opening that should have been blocked.
Mike walked toward the car.
Evan followed, still defensive.
“Why didn’t anyone stop me when I drove in?”
Mike looked at the empty entrance.
“That is a fair question.”
It was the first thing Mike had said that didn’t sound like an accusation.
Evan expected an argument.
Instead, Mike crouched beside one of the orange markings.
“There are utilities under here,” he said. “We don’t know exactly how deep every section is until we expose it.”
Evan stared at the ground.
The anger on his face slowly gave way to concern.
His car suddenly seemed less important.
A younger worker named Carlos appeared at the edge of the work area carrying a bundle of temporary fencing.
He stopped when he saw the car.
“That’s the vehicle?”
Mike nodded.
Carlos looked uncomfortable.
“I told dispatch the barrier was down.”
Mike turned.
“When?”
“About an hour ago.”
Evan looked sharply at him.
“An hour?”
Carlos nodded.
“I thought somebody was sending a replacement.”
The silence that followed was heavier than the machinery.
Evan’s expression hardened again, but this time not toward Mike.
“So you knew this entrance wasn’t secure?”
Carlos looked at Mike.
Mike didn’t answer for him.
Instead, he said, “Knowing about a problem and fixing it are two different things.”
That sentence stayed with Evan.
Because suddenly there were two separate questions.
Why had Mike stopped him?
And why had nobody stopped him sooner?
Mike instructed Carlos to keep everyone clear while he contacted the site supervisor.
The excavator remained still.
No one touched Evan’s car.
For several minutes, nothing happened.
Then a supervisor named Dana arrived carrying a tablet and a radio.
She looked at the vehicle.
Then at the broken barrier.
Then at Mike.
“What happened?”
Mike gave her the facts without exaggeration.
Evan stood nearby, listening.
For the first time, he wasn’t interested in winning the argument.
He wanted to know how close they had actually come to disaster.
Dana studied the marked ground.
Then she looked at Evan.
“You may have driven across an area that wasn’t supposed to be accessible.”
Evan swallowed.
“May have?”
Dana didn’t answer immediately.
She turned toward the excavator.
“We need to verify the utility map before that machine moves another inch.”
The sports car remained untouched.
But now everyone understood that the real danger wasn’t the car.
It was what lay beneath it.
