The administrative annex vanished behind us as the federal marshals’ four-wheel-drive utility vehicle smashed through the secondary construction gate of the Valis Reclamation Foundry. The coastal rain here didn’t fall in sheets; it blew sideways off the Atlantic, carrying a heavy, briny salt spray that crusted immediately on the windshield. The air tasted of low-grade fuel oil, wet coal soot, and the sulfurous stench of molten iron being poured into damp sand beds.
“The disposal team is already staging in bay four,” the old line sergeant said, his voice a dry rasp that cut through the mechanical scream of the marine winches along the pier. He sat in the front passenger seat, a ruggedized terminal map balanced across his knees, his tactical gloves smeared with fresh grease from the gate chain he’d cut three minutes ago.
Miller didn’t answer. The stocky instructor was already moving before the vehicle came to a full stop on the rain-slicked gravel yard. He threw the rear door open, his boots splashing through six inches of brackish water as he hauled our remaining armory transit cases out into the downpour.
The foundry building was an ancient, corrugated iron barn that had been patched with unpainted sheets of zinc oxide. Inside, the noise was an industrial grinding roar—the rhythmic thud of a six-ton drop forge and the hiss of cooling water lines spraying over active molds.
We ran down the central catwalk, our footsteps deadened by the thick layer of iron scale and sand that covered the steel grating.
“The master casting molds for Batch 41-A are in the rear pit,” I called out to Miller, my thumb pressing the flat of the paper manifest against my ribs to keep it from tearing in the wet draft. “They’re trying to run a clearing charge through the furnace to melt the dimensional templates before the grand jury subpoena hits the regional office.”
At the far end of the bay, three foundry workers in heavy leather smocks and protective face shields stood around an industrial hydraulic press. They weren’t executing a production run; they were using a dual-hose oxy-acetylene cutting torch to shear the main mounting ears off the casting dies. Beside the gas cylinders, the torch assembly’s secondary oxygen tank pressure gauge was missing, leaving an open, brass-threaded hole that hissed faintly with back-pressure.
“Step back from the console!” Miller shouted, his voice dropping into his command register as he jammed his armory wire cutters directly between the hydraulic lever and the valve housing of the press. The steel jaws jammed the mechanism with a heavy, crunching latch that brought the top plate to a grinding halt two inches from the master template.
The lead foundry foreman yanked his protective shield up, his face slick with sweat and black carbon dust under the orange glow of the furnace. He didn’t drop the torch. He adjusted his grip on the brass valves, his eyes tracking the two federal marshals who were clearing the catwalk behind us with their badges drawn.

“The scrap order was suspended sixty minutes ago by the district court,” the senior marshal said, his boots clicking hard on the iron platform as he dropped a plastic-sealed copy of the subpoena onto the grease-stained control desk. “You touch those valves again, and you’re obstructing a federal grand jury investigation into structural logistics fraud.”
I didn’t wait for the foreman to clear the lane. I stepped past Miller’s shoulder, my hands closing over the cold, unpainted iron of the master casting die resting inside the press cradle. The surface was pitted, rusted from the salt air, but along the inner track where the receiver block was shaped, the metal held a series of deep, microscopic stress gouges.
It wasn’t a bad batch of steel from a supplier error. The mold itself was fractured.
The foundry had been using worn-out, out-of-tolerance tooling that had been rejected by the main ordnance depot years ago, re-stamping the identification codes to pass off compromised metal as high-grade reconditioned material. The physical secret wasn’t a digital forgery; it was a physical artifact carved into twenty tons of cold, compromised iron, and the corporate extraction squad had been sent here to ensure the evidence was poured back into the furnace before the morning shift could see the dimensions.
“Look at the registry stamp on the underside of the bed,” I told Miller, my fingers tracing the flaking lacquer along the serial plate.
Miller leaned down, his flashlight beam cutting through the sulfur fumes rising from the floor pit.
