Chapter 4: Enough Room

Three days later, Daniel returned to the shopping center.

A small notice had been placed near the elevator:

PLEASE KEEP ELEVATOR ENTRANCES CLEAR. ALLOW SPACE FOR SAFE ENTRY AND EXIT.

It was not addressed to wheelchair users.

It did not tell anyone who should enter first.

It simply recognized that people sometimes needed room to move differently.

Daniel appreciated that.

As he approached the elevator, he saw Gloria coming from the opposite direction.

She stopped when she noticed him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Gloria glanced at the new notice.

“You got your sign,” she said.

Daniel shook his head.

“We got it.”

Gloria frowned.

“That isn’t what I meant.”

“I know.”

The elevator arrived.

The doors opened.

Daniel positioned himself at the entrance.

Gloria was close enough to enter first if she wanted.

Instead, she stepped aside.

Daniel turned his wheelchair and rolled inside.

Only after he had cleared the entrance did Gloria enter.

The doors closed.

She looked toward the floor numbers.

“I didn’t understand why you couldn’t just go straight in,” she said quietly.

Daniel looked at her.

“Most people don’t, until they need to.”

Gloria was silent.

The elevator stopped at the next floor, and a family entered. One child immediately moved aside to make room for Daniel’s chair.

Gloria watched the child do it without complaint.

No one had needed to be ordered.

No one had lost a place.

They had simply made room.

When the elevator reached the parking level, Gloria stepped out with Daniel.

She hesitated.

“I thought you were asking everyone to wait for you,” she said.

“I wasn’t.”

“I understand that now.”

Daniel nodded.

She looked uncomfortable.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel did not rush to fill the silence.

After everything that had happened, he knew an apology did not need to be forced into a larger speech.

“Thank you,” he said.

Gloria gave a small nod.

They walked toward the parking area in different directions.

Daniel looked back once at the elevator doors.

Nothing about the building had changed dramatically.

The elevator still belonged to everyone.

So did the hallway.

So did the doorway.

But Daniel no longer felt that asking for enough room was an imposition.

And Gloria had finally learned the distinction that had started the entire argument:

Making room for someone to move safely was not giving them special treatment.

It was simply making room.
