Chapter 2: What Actually Happened

The elevator reached the parking level.

Daniel rolled out first.

Gloria followed, still visibly irritated.

“You made everyone wait,” she said.

Daniel kept moving.

Then Gloria stopped near the information desk.

Daniel heard her speaking to a shopping-center employee.

“He blocked the elevator.”

Daniel turned around.

The employee looked between them.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “What happened?”

Gloria answered first.

“He refused to let people use the elevator normally. He took up the entire entrance.”

Daniel knew how quickly a story could change when only one person told it.

“I needed room to turn,” he said. “She stood across the entrance and told me to take the next elevator.”

Gloria shook her head.

“I asked him to let me go first.”

Before the disagreement could grow, the man from the elevator approached with his shopping bags.

“I was there,” he said. “She was standing in front of him. He asked her to move.”

Gloria looked at him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I was standing inside the elevator.”

That ended the argument for the moment.

The employee introduced himself as Marcus Hill and explained that he wanted to understand what had happened rather than decide based on competing accusations.

Daniel described the problem plainly.

He didn’t need an elevator reserved for him.

He didn’t expect everyone else to disappear.

He needed enough room to angle his wheelchair through the doorway without hitting the frame or another passenger.

Marcus listened carefully.

Gloria remained defensive.

“I still don’t see why everyone should have to wait.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because waiting a few seconds is different from asking someone to enter unsafely.”

That sentence stayed with Marcus.

He told them he would speak with the shopping-center supervisor and review what had happened.

Daniel almost left.

Instead, Marcus asked him to stay.

The confrontation had moved beyond hurt feelings. Now the question was whether the shopping center understood what Daniel had actually needed.

And Gloria, who had expected the matter to end with Daniel simply being told to wait, was no longer controlling the story.
