Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Prank

Richard did not confess.

He did something more revealing.

He resigned.

The resignation arrived by email the morning after the HOA board requested another interview.

He claimed the accusations had made his position “untenable.”

The board accepted his resignation temporarily while reviewing the evidence.

But David wasn’t satisfied.

He wanted the neighborhood to know exactly what had happened.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he didn’t want the same thing happening to someone else.

The HOA contacted local authorities and provided the footage, photographs, access records, missing equipment reports, and physical evidence.

Several details were consistent.

The maintenance vest.

The specialized tool.

The timing.

The camera footage.

And eventually, a search of the storage area revealed something else.

A pair of work gloves.

One had a small burgundy thread caught in its seam.

That alone was not proof.

But investigators found additional evidence connecting Richard to the damaged bench.

The final piece came from his phone.

Messages showed that he had been involved in a private dispute with the HOA board over maintenance contracts.

He had apparently believed the board was preparing to replace the landscaping contractor.

The bench damage was not part of some elaborate criminal scheme.

It was retaliation.

The fake snake had been added to make the discovery chaotic and to create suspicion between two residents already known to argue.

Marla’s torn glove provided the perfect false clue.

Richard had counted on everyone seeing the fabric and immediately assuming Marla had staged the prank herself.

He had underestimated one thing.

David and Marla eventually stopped fighting each other long enough to compare what they knew.

The realization embarrassed both of them.

Marla apologized first.

“I accused you because it was easier than admitting I was afraid.”

David accepted the apology.

“I should have listened sooner.”

Neither pretended they would suddenly become close friends.

That wasn’t necessary.

Respect did not always require friendship.

Sometimes it only required recognizing another person’s right to be treated fairly.

The HOA repaired the bench.

The loose bolts were replaced.

The frame was reinforced.

A small security camera was installed nearby.

The fake snake was discarded.

Or so everyone thought.

Until Evelyn found something beneath the bench during the final inspection.

A small plastic container.

It was wedged deep inside the metal frame.

Nobody had noticed it before.

The property manager opened it carefully.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

There were only four words written on it.

YOU BLAMED EACH OTHER.

David read it twice.

Marla stared at the message.

Then Evelyn looked toward the walking path.

“This wasn’t just about the bench,” she said.

She was right.

The person who damaged the bench had wanted something more than property damage.

He had wanted division.

And for a while, it had worked.
