Chapter 2: Two Missing Bolts

By late afternoon, the bench had been roped off with yellow maintenance tape.

The HOA had received enough complaints about the damaged seat that it could no longer treat the incident as another neighborhood disagreement.

David returned to the area with Evelyn.

Marla was gone.

That absence made David more uneasy than her earlier shouting.

The bench was one of several identical metal-and-wood seats installed along the walking path nearly fifteen years earlier. They were simple, sturdy, and intended for residents who needed a place to rest during their walks.

Evelyn ran her fingers along the broken frame without touching the loose hardware.

“This wasn’t an accident.”

David nodded.

“I know.”

She pointed toward the underside.

“Look.”

One mounting bracket had been loosened cleanly. The metal wasn’t bent from impact. The bolts had been removed.

Someone had taken the time to work underneath the bench.

Someone had wanted it unstable.

David remembered Marla’s reaction.

Not the accusation.

The final sentence.

Next time, I won’t use a fake snake.

He hated how threatening it sounded.

But he also knew something else.

Threatening words weren’t proof.

He didn’t want a neighborhood feud to turn into a story where everyone chose sides before anyone knew what had happened.

So he called the HOA property manager.

By sunset, the maintenance supervisor had inspected the bench.

His conclusion was simple.

The bench had been deliberately tampered with.

The fake snake, however, was not part of the bench damage.

It had been placed afterward.

That distinction mattered.

The snake was a prank.

The damaged bench was property interference.

The two together suggested planning.

But there was still no proof of who had done it.

David handed over the burgundy fabric.

The maintenance supervisor placed it inside a clear evidence bag.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“You kept it.”

“I figured somebody should.”

She looked toward the houses bordering the path.

“Did Marla own a burgundy gardening glove?”

David thought about it.

“I’ve seen her wear them.”

“That’s interesting.”

“It’s not proof.”

“No,” Evelyn agreed. “But it’s interesting.”

The HOA manager promised to review the community security footage.

There were cameras near the clubhouse and parking entrance, but none pointed directly at the bench.

That seemed to close the matter.

Until the following morning.

David found a small handwritten note tucked beneath his windshield wiper.

STOP DIGGING.

No signature.

No explanation.

He stood beside his car for several seconds.

The neighborhood was quiet.

A sprinkler clicked across a lawn.

A delivery truck rolled slowly down the street.

Everything looked ordinary.

That was what bothered him.

David folded the note and placed it in his pocket.

He had spent most of his adult life believing that ordinary problems should be handled calmly.

A loose fence could be repaired.

A complaint could be discussed.

A disagreement could be settled.

But someone had deliberately damaged a public bench.

Someone had staged a fake snake.

And now someone was telling him to stop asking questions.

David looked back toward the walking path.

The bench was hidden behind the trees.

For the first time, he wondered whether it had ever really been about frightening Marla.

Maybe the snake had been designed to frighten someone else.
