Chapter 3: The Camera
The police arrived less than ten minutes later.
Karen immediately changed her posture.
She became calmer.
Almost offended.
She explained that the ambulance had blocked her street.
She said she had complained several times.
She claimed she had only been trying to protect her property.
The wrench was still on the pavement.
The damaged tire was impossible to explain away.
But Karen had an answer for everything.
She said the wrench had fallen.
She said she had been inspecting the tire.
She said she never intended to damage anything.
The paramedic said nothing.
He simply pointed toward the ambulance.
“Camera.”
The officer looked up.
Karen’s face tightened.
The camera footage was downloaded.
There was no ambiguity.
It showed Karen approaching the tire.
It showed her looking around.
It showed her driving the pointed end of the wrench into the rubber.
It showed her pulling it sideways.
It showed the tire deflating.
And it showed the moment she looked toward the camera after realizing she had been recorded.
The officer watched the footage twice.
Then he looked at Karen.
“You want to revise your statement?”
Karen didn’t answer.
Behind them, Emily came rushing out of the clubhouse.
Her face was pale.
“My father is in the ambulance.”
The officer turned.
Emily looked at the ruined tire.
“What happened?”
The paramedic explained.
Emily stared at Karen.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she asked the question nobody had considered until that moment.
“How long will it take to replace the tire?”
The paramedic shook his head.
“They’re sending another unit.”
Emily looked toward the ambulance.
Walter was still inside.
Waiting.
Waiting for another ambulance because the one that had come to save him had been deliberately disabled.
The realization hit her hard.
Karen had not merely damaged a vehicle.
She had interfered with an emergency response.
And although Walter was eventually transported safely, the delay suddenly felt much more serious.
Karen’s expression hardened.
“I didn’t know anyone was dying.”
Emily turned toward her.
“You knew it was an ambulance.”
Karen opened her mouth.
Emily raised one hand.
“No. You knew exactly what it was.”
Her voice never became loud.
That somehow made it more powerful.
“You just decided your inconvenience mattered more.”
Karen looked away.
For once, she had no immediate answer.
The police photographed the wrench.
They photographed the tire.
They documented the camera.
And they took Karen’s statement.
But the story wasn’t staying between Karen, the paramedic, and the police.
The clubhouse security system had captured everything from a second angle.
And the homeowners’ association president had already requested a copy.
