Chapter 3: The Second Entrance
Karen had not returned to argue.
At least, not immediately.
She parked near a side entrance where the festival committee had placed another set of barriers. From inside the SUV, she watched families moving between houses and food stands.
Her anger had hardened into something more deliberate.
She believed the neighborhood had embarrassed her.
And she was determined not to be the person who backed down.
Daniel learned about her position from a volunteer.
He walked toward the side entrance but stopped well short of the SUV.
Karen lowered her window.
“You’re following me now?”
“No.”
“Then leave.”
“This entrance is closed too.”
Karen pointed behind him.
“I have a house down there.”
Daniel nodded.
“And after the festival ends, you’ll be able to drive home.”
“That could be hours.”
“That’s the event schedule.”
Karen shook her head.
“You don’t understand. Some of us actually live here.”
Daniel almost answered sharply.
Instead, he looked at the people behind him.
Elaine was helping an older couple find two empty chairs.
A grandfather was holding his granddaughter’s pumpkin bucket.
A teenage volunteer was picking up the cones Karen had knocked over earlier.
These were not strangers occupying Karen’s neighborhood.
They were the neighborhood.
Daniel said quietly, “Nobody is taking your home away from you. We’re asking you to wait until the street is safe.”
Karen stared at him.
Then she noticed the phones.
Three people were recording again.
Her face tightened.
“You all think this is funny?”
Nobody answered.
Karen rolled up her window.
For the next twenty minutes, she remained in the SUV.
Then she started the engine.
Daniel immediately raised his hand.
“Please don’t move.”
The SUV remained still.
Karen reversed into a legal parking space instead.
It looked like the conflict might finally be cooling.
Then a child dropped a candy bucket near the curb.
The child stepped toward it.
A volunteer quickly guided the child back.
Karen watched the scene through her windshield.
Something about it seemed to reinforce her argument rather than weaken it.
She pulled out her phone.
Within minutes, she had posted a message to the neighborhood group:
“The festival organizers are blocking residents from accessing their own homes.”
The post spread quickly.
Some neighbors defended the festival.
Others demanded answers.
Then someone asked the question nobody had considered:
“Was the street actually authorized to be closed?”
Daniel saw the post.
He knew the answer.
But he also knew that simply telling people would not be enough.
The next morning, he would have to produce the paperwork.
And Karen had already promised the neighborhood she would.
