Chapter 4: The Second Sack

Frank took the note inside.

He didn’t show it to Mara.

He didn’t show it to anyone at first.

He called the officer who had been handling the snake incident and reported it.

Then he called Melissa.

She arrived within twenty minutes.

“Dad, this is harassment now.”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

Frank held up the paper.

“We don’t know who left it.”

Melissa stared at him.

“You know exactly who.”

“No,” Frank said quietly. “I know who I suspect.”

There was a difference.

That difference mattered.

By late afternoon, the neighborhood association president, Helen Parker, came to Frank’s house.

Helen was in her sixties and had served on the association board for years.

She didn’t bring gossip.

She brought paperwork.

“There have been complaints,” she said.

“About me?”

“About both of you.”

She explained that several residents had complained about escalating disputes between Frank and Mara.

The association had received reports about barking, property boundaries, arguments, online posts, and now the snake incident.

Helen placed a folder on the table.

“We’re not a court,” she said. “But we’re responsible for keeping the common areas safe.”

Frank nodded.

“I understand.”

Helen looked at him carefully.

“I also know your reputation here.”

Frank gave a tired smile.

“I’d rather have that than a reputation for throwing snakes.”

Helen almost laughed.

Almost.

Then she became serious.

“Don’t respond publicly.”

“I haven’t.”

“Keep it that way.”

That evening, Frank’s security camera caught movement near the side fence.

A flashlight.

Someone was walking along the neighboring property.

Frank checked the footage frame by frame.

It was Dennis.

He stopped near the shed.

Then he looked toward Frank’s camera.

For several seconds, he stood completely still.

Then he walked away.

Frank called the authorities.

But before anyone arrived, another person appeared on the footage.

Mara.

She came outside carrying a pair of work gloves.

She walked to the shed.

Opened it.

Looked inside.

Then she walked to the second sack.

She didn’t touch it.

Instead, she sat down beside the shed and covered her face with both hands.

Frank watched.

The image didn’t fit the story he had been telling himself.

Mara wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t triumphant.

She looked frightened.

Frank called Melissa.

They watched the footage together.

“Maybe she’s scared of what’s in it,” Melissa said.

“Maybe.”

“Dad, whatever happens, don’t go over there.”

“I won’t.”

But later that night, Mara knocked on his door.

Frank opened it with the chain still attached.

She stood on the walkway.

No smug smile.

No crossed arms.

No anger.

Just exhaustion.

“I didn’t write that note,” she said.

Frank didn’t answer.

“And the second bag isn’t what you think.”

“What is it?”

Mara looked toward the street.

“My brother brought it.”

“Why?”

She hesitated.

“Because Dennis has been doing things without telling me.”

Frank studied her face.

“You threw the first bag.”

“I know.”

“You admitted it.”

“Yes.”

“And you thought it was funny.”

Her eyes dropped.

“For about ten seconds.”

Frank opened the door another inch.

“Then what changed?”

Mara looked back at him.

“When I saw your face.”

That answer stayed with Frank.

She continued.

“I wanted to scare you. I didn’t think about what could happen if something went wrong.”

Frank’s anger didn’t disappear.

But something else entered the conversation.

Accountability.

“Then tell me the truth about the second bag.”

Mara swallowed.

“I don’t know what’s inside.”

Frank stared at her.

For the first time, they were both afraid of the same thing.
