Chapter 3: What the Camera Caught
Frank installed a security camera the next morning.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because he wanted certainty.
He had spent enough years watching arguments turn into competing versions of reality. His wife had taught him something important during their marriage:
When people disagree about what happened, memory becomes a weapon.
A camera didn’t have a memory.
It had a timestamp.
Frank placed one camera toward the backyard and another near the side gate.
Melissa helped him connect them to his phone.
“Now,” she said, “you don’t have to guess.”
That evening, the footage produced something neither of them expected.
The camera had captured Mara approaching the fence with the canvas sack.
But she wasn’t alone.
A man followed her.
Frank didn’t recognize him at first.
Then he did.
Mara’s brother, Dennis.
He lived across town and had been visiting her that afternoon.
The footage showed Dennis carrying something toward the shed.
A second sack.
Frank watched silently.
Melissa leaned closer.
“Dad.”
“I see it.”
Dennis placed the second bag beside the shed.
Mara later returned with the first sack.
But the footage revealed something else.
The second bag wasn’t identical to the first.
It was larger.
And heavier.
Frank felt a cold sensation in his chest.
Melissa called the animal control officer who had visited the day before.
They advised them not to approach the property or attempt to inspect the second sack themselves.
The next morning, an officer returned with another official.
This time, they spoke with Mara.
Frank stayed inside.
Through the window, he watched Mara gesture sharply toward his house.
Dennis stood behind her.
For nearly twenty minutes, nobody crossed the fence.
Eventually, Mara went inside.
Dennis remained outside.
Then something strange happened.
Dennis walked toward the shed.
He opened it.
He stood there for several seconds.
Then he closed it again.
He didn’t touch the second sack.
That afternoon, the officers told Frank there wasn’t enough evidence to determine what the second bag contained without access to Mara’s property.
Frank understood.
The law had boundaries.
So did he.
He could not cross hers simply because she had crossed his.
That night, Frank sat alone on his patio.
The lawn had been cleaned.
The gate was still closed.
He thought about his wife.
She had died two years earlier.
She used to sit in the same chair and complain about Frank spending too much money on birdseed.
He smiled at the memory.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Carl.
You need to see what Mara posted.
Attached was a screenshot.
Mara had written that Frank had “created unnecessary fear” in the neighborhood and was “weaponizing animal control against an elderly pet owner.”
The post had dozens of comments.
Some defended her.
Some defended Frank.
Most people didn’t know what had happened.
Frank stared at the screen.
He could respond.
He could explain.
He could post the camera footage.
But he didn’t.
Instead, he put the phone down.
For the first time, he realized something important.
This wasn’t really about snakes anymore.
It was about whether he would let anger decide what kind of neighbor—and what kind of man—he became.
The next morning, however, the situation changed again.
Frank found something tucked beneath his mailbox.
A folded piece of paper.
Four words were written across it.
YOU HAVEN’T SEEN EVERYTHING.
