Chapter 2: The Call Nobody Wanted to Make
Frank didn’t sleep much that night.
The first bag had been removed before sunset by animal control. The officers had carefully collected the snakes, documented the torn canvas, and photographed the lawn.
Frank had given them Mara’s name.
He had also given them the history.
The escaped dog.
The arguments.
The complaint.
And, finally, the second bag.
That detail changed the tone of the conversation.
One of the officers asked Frank whether he had personally seen Mara throw the bag.
“Yes.”
“Did she say anything?”
Frank repeated her words as accurately as he could.
The officer wrote them down.
Frank expected to feel relieved once the officers left.
Instead, he felt tired.
He had lived in the neighborhood for twenty-seven years. He knew which houses had children, which retirees watered their lawns at dawn, and which neighbors collected their newspapers for each other when someone traveled.
He had always believed a neighborhood was supposed to be a place where people watched out for one another.
Now he was locking his patio gate because someone next door had thrown snakes into his yard.
The following morning, Frank’s daughter, Melissa, arrived.
She took one look at the patio gate and frowned.
“Dad, what happened?”
Frank told her.
She listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she walked to the window and looked toward Mara’s house.
“You’re not going over there.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“You’re angry.”
“I’m furious.”
“That means you definitely shouldn’t.”
Frank almost smiled.
His daughter had inherited her mother’s habit of speaking to him as though he were still sixteen.
But there was something else bothering him.
“The second bag,” he said.
Melissa turned.
“You’re sure there was another one?”
“I saw it.”
“And she knew you saw it?”
“She looked at it when I mentioned it.”
Melissa’s expression hardened.
“Then let the authorities handle it.”
Frank nodded.
But later that afternoon, something unexpected happened.
His neighbor, Carl Benton, knocked on the door.
Carl was seventy and lived three houses down. He had watched Frank’s house while Frank’s wife was recovering from surgery years earlier. The two men often talked over coffee at the local diner.
Carl stepped inside and lowered his voice.
“I heard what happened.”
Frank sighed.
“News travels fast.”
“Not just this.”
Carl hesitated.
“There was an argument behind the community mailboxes last night.”
“With Mara?”
Carl nodded.
“She was telling people you had tried to get her dog taken away.”
Frank shook his head.
“I reported the dog because it kept getting into my yard.”
“I know.”
Carl looked uncomfortable.
“She told people there was more to it.”
“What more?”
“She said you were trying to push her out of the neighborhood.”
Frank stared at him.
“That isn’t true.”
“I know.”
That simple answer meant more than Frank expected.
Carl continued.
“There’s another thing.”
He pulled his phone from his pocket.
“Someone posted a picture of your backyard in the neighborhood group.”
Frank felt his stomach tighten.
“Who?”
“Anonymous account.”
The photograph showed the torn canvas bag lying on Frank’s grass.
No snakes were visible.
But the caption read:
SOME PEOPLE WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE THEIR NEIGHBORS LOOK BAD.
Frank stared at the screen.
The incident wasn’t staying between two houses anymore.
Someone was turning it into a neighborhood story.
And Frank knew how neighborhood stories worked.
Facts got smaller.
Rumors got bigger.
