Chapter 5: The Neighbor Who Had Seen Everything

The next Saturday, Harold knocked on Margaret’s door.

He had news.

He had spoken with two other neighbors.

They had experienced the same problem.

Leaves from Frank’s yard had been blowing onto their properties for months.

One neighbor had complained about leaves clogging a gutter.

Another had found piles against the side of his garage.

Nobody had wanted to confront Frank.

Margaret suddenly understood why.

The problem had never been isolated.

Frank had simply been doing the same thing in different directions.

Harold didn’t suggest a confrontation.

Instead, he suggested something simpler.

They should all meet and clear the drainage channel together.

Margaret agreed.

So did the other neighbors.

The following Saturday morning, four homeowners stood along the property boundary with rakes, gloves and wheelbarrows.

Frank arrived last.

He looked at the group.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then Harold handed him a rake.

Frank stared at it.

“You’ve got to be kidding.”

Harold smiled.

“Nope.”

Frank looked toward Margaret.

She was already clearing leaves from the drainage channel.

After a long pause, Frank took the rake.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody lectured him.

They simply worked.

The drainage channel turned out to be badly clogged.

Roots had grown through one section.

Leaves had compacted beneath another.

Once the blockage was cleared, water began moving freely again.

Frank stood quietly beside the open channel.

Then he noticed something.

The leaves weren’t flowing toward Margaret’s garden anymore.

They were moving naturally toward the drainage outlet.

He looked at Margaret.

She didn’t say anything.

She didn’t need to.

The solution had been sitting underneath the argument all along.

By noon, the channel was clear.

But the real surprise came when Frank walked over to Margaret’s garden.

He looked at the wooden gate.

Then at the stone path.

“I owe you an apology,” he said.

Margaret waited.

Frank admitted he’d been trying to solve his yard problem quickly.

Instead of asking for help, he’d pushed the mess toward everyone else.

He didn’t excuse it.

He simply admitted it.

Margaret accepted the apology.

But she told him something he hadn’t expected.

“An apology matters. What you do next matters more.”

Frank nodded.

For once, he didn’t argue.
