Chapter 4: What Margaret Found in the Shed
Three days later, Margaret was cleaning out her garden shed when she found an old envelope.
Inside was a copy of a neighborhood drainage plan from nearly twenty years earlier.
She spread it across the kitchen table.
The drainage easement did exist.
But it didn’t mean what Frank had claimed.
The document allowed maintenance access for the drainage system.
It did not give either homeowner permission to relocate fences, plantings, or boundaries.
Margaret sat quietly for a long time.
Then she noticed a handwritten note on the back.
Her late husband had written it years earlier.
Keep the old drainage channel clear. Frank’s side floods first.
Margaret smiled sadly.
Her husband had apparently known about the problem.
He had also apparently known how to handle it.
He hadn’t fought about it.
He had simply kept the channel clear.
The next morning, Margaret knocked on Frank’s door.
She brought the document.
Frank read it without speaking.
For several moments, the only sound was a lawn mower somewhere down the street.
Margaret explained that she didn’t want a feud.
She offered to help clear the drainage channel, provided the work stayed within the documented access area.
Frank looked at the paper.
Then he looked at her.
“I didn’t know about this part,” he admitted.
It was the first honest sentence he’d said to her in weeks.
Margaret nodded.
“Neither did I.”
Something in his expression softened.
But then he asked about the leaves.
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
Frank sighed.
He said he’d been blowing leaves toward her property because the drainage grate on his side kept clogging.
He thought sending the leaves downhill would keep the water moving.
Margaret stared at him.
“So you knew they were going into my yard?”
Frank didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Margaret could have turned the conversation into another fight.
Instead, she told him that if he wanted the drainage fixed, they needed to solve the actual problem.
Not move it next door.
Frank nodded reluctantly.
For the first time, they were discussing the same problem instead of fighting over its symptoms.
But neither realized that someone else had been watching the whole dispute.
