Chapter 2: The Line Between Two Yards

Margaret had lived on Willow Creek Drive for eleven years.

She knew every season of that street.

She knew which maple tree turned red first, which neighbor decorated too early for Christmas, and which houses stayed dark until nearly noon on Saturdays.

She also knew Frank.

Not well.

They had never been friends.

But for years, they had managed the ordinary civility expected of neighbors. A wave from a driveway. A brief hello at the mailbox. A nod when their paths crossed.

That changed gradually.

It began with small things.

Frank occasionally left his trash bins partly across Margaret’s side of the driveway. Then he began parking his truck close enough to the property line that Margaret had to squeeze past it.

Margaret never made an issue of those things.

She believed in choosing her battles.

The leaves were different.

Her garden was something she cared about deeply.

After her husband died, Margaret had begun spending more time outside. She planted hydrangeas, trimmed the roses, and rebuilt the narrow stone path beside the house herself.

The work gave structure to quiet mornings.

It also gave her a place where she felt completely at home.

That was why Frank’s behavior bothered her more than a little litter ever could.

He wasn’t simply cleaning his yard.

He was making Margaret’s yard part of his cleanup plan.

The following morning, Margaret found something tucked beneath her mailbox.

It was a handwritten note.

Your gate caused the leaves to blow back. Please don’t interfere with my yard maintenance again.

Margaret read it twice.

She almost laughed.

Instead, she folded it and placed it inside her kitchen drawer.

Then she looked out the window.

Frank was already outside.

He wasn’t blowing leaves.

He was measuring something along the property line.

That caught her attention.

A few minutes later, Margaret noticed a second thing.

Frank had placed several small orange flags in the grass.

They were not on his side.

They were several inches into hers.

Margaret walked outside.

Frank looked up.

Neither spoke.

He simply pulled another flag from his pocket and pushed it into the ground.

Margaret looked at the line.

Then at him.

Something had changed.

The leaves had been a nuisance.

The flags suggested something larger.
