Chapter 4: The Line Between a Neighbor and a Watcher
The association manager asked Karen why she had kept records of David’s movements.
Karen said she was protecting her property.
She claimed David’s family had become careless about the boundary.
But the list went far beyond property issues.
It included personal observations.
“Grandson arrives at 4:12.”
“Man in blue jacket visits.”
“David outside after dark.”
“Delivery at 10:37.”
David felt something cold settle in his stomach.
His home had always been his private place.
Now he understood that someone nearby had been watching it like a schedule.
He didn’t accuse Karen of anything beyond what the pages showed.
He simply asked the manager to document the list as part of the dispute.
Karen became furious.
She said David was making her look like a criminal.
David shook his head.
“I don’t need to make you look like anything.”
That sentence quieted the room.
“I just want my home to feel like my home again.”
For the first time, Karen had no immediate answer.
The meeting ended without a final decision.
The association asked both homeowners to remove anything attached to the fence and to avoid direct confrontations while the matter was reviewed.
David thought that would end it.
It didn’t.
The next week, Karen moved the small speaker.
She placed it closer to the sidewalk.
The LED system disappeared.
Then a new camera appeared on her porch.
It pointed toward the street.
David noticed it when he returned from the grocery store.
He didn’t confront her.
He took a photograph from his own property.
Megan advised him to stop engaging directly.
“Let the records speak.”
So David did.
He installed a simple privacy screen along the portion of his yard where the fence faced his patio.
He planted two tall shrubs.
He wasn’t trying to hide his life.
He was trying to reclaim it.
Then, one Saturday morning, his grandson Ethan arrived.
He was sixteen and had planned to help David repair the old porch steps.
Before Ethan reached the front door, Karen stepped outside.
She held up her phone.
“Tell your grandfather to keep you away from my fence.”
Ethan looked confused.
David came outside.
“Karen, don’t involve my grandson.”
She raised the phone.
“I have proof of everything.”
David looked at the device.
Then at the porch camera.
Then at the fence.
He realized Karen had changed tactics.
The prank was over.
Now she was building a story.
And David knew exactly what he needed to do next.
