Chapter 2: The Video She Didn’t Want Anyone to See

Karen went inside before David could ask another question.

Her front door slammed hard enough to rattle the glass beside it.

David stood alone beside the fence.

The afternoon suddenly felt quieter.

He could hear lawn sprinklers ticking somewhere down the street. A delivery truck rolled through the next intersection. A dog barked twice and stopped.

David looked at the fence again.

It had never been dangerous.

That was almost beside the point.

The real problem was intent.

Someone had deliberately created a frightening moment, waited for him to react, and recorded it without telling him.

David took several photographs from his side of the property.

Then he called his daughter, Megan.

He didn’t call to complain.

He called because Megan had spent twenty years working in property management and knew better than anyone that neighborhood disputes became complicated when people relied on memory instead of records.

When she arrived forty minutes later, David showed her the photographs.

Megan studied them carefully.

“You said she was already recording?”

“Before I touched the fence.”

Megan looked toward Karen’s house.

“Then the video might show more than the prank.”

David nodded.

That evening, David received a message from the neighborhood association.

A resident had submitted a complaint claiming that David had “tampered with a private boundary structure” and behaved aggressively toward another homeowner.

David read it twice.

Karen had reversed the story.

Megan immediately noticed something.

“She filed the complaint the same afternoon.”

David looked at the timestamp.

Twenty-six minutes after the incident.

“That fast?”

“She was prepared.”

The next morning, David received an email from the association manager requesting a written statement.

David sat at his kitchen table with the curtains open to the backyard.

For the first time, he wondered whether staying quiet had allowed this situation to grow.

He wrote down everything he remembered.

The touch.

The flash.

The sound.

Karen’s reaction.

The phone.

The hidden speaker.

The LED strip.

He attached the photographs.

Then Megan asked the question David had been avoiding.

“Did she ever show you the recording?”

“No.”

“Then we need to know what she recorded.”

David didn’t know how to get that answer.

Karen wasn’t going to volunteer it.

But two days later, something unexpected happened.

David received an email from a neighbor named Linda Foster.

Linda had been walking her dog that afternoon and had seen Karen standing near the fence several minutes before David arrived.

She had noticed the phone.

And she had noticed something else.

Karen wasn’t simply holding it.

She had been checking the screen repeatedly, as though waiting for someone to enter the frame.

Linda attached a photograph.

It was blurry, taken from across the street.

But Karen was visible.

So was the phone.

And behind her was the fence.

The timestamp was seven minutes before David touched the rail.

David stared at the image.

The prank hadn’t been spontaneous.

Karen had been waiting for him.

But David still didn’t know why.

Then Megan zoomed in on the photograph.

“Dad,” she said quietly.

“Look at her screen.”
