Chapter 4: No More Apologies

Daniel did not retaliate.

He did not confront Marlene in anger.

Instead, he picked up the broken speaker and placed the pieces in a box.

Then he spoke with Sarah.

They agreed on something they had avoided saying aloud.

They had spent too much time treating Marlene’s demands as if they were reasonable simply because she delivered them loudly.

The next afternoon, Daniel went to the fence.

Marlene was already outside.

“You’ve got something to say?” she asked.

“Yes.”

He held the box containing the damaged speaker.

“You don’t have permission to enter our yard or destroy our property.”

Marlene crossed her arms.

“I told you the music was bothering me.”

“And I kept it at a reasonable level.”

“You’re ignoring the neighborhood.”

“No. I’m respecting it. I’m also respecting my family.”

Marlene scoffed.

“Your children make noise all day.”

“They play outside.”

“They disturb me.”

Daniel nodded.

“I understand that you dislike it.”

“Then make them stop.”

“No.”

The single word landed harder than an argument.

Marlene stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“They’re going to follow reasonable rules. They won’t damage your property. They won’t deliberately harass you. But they are allowed to play.”

Sarah stood beside him.

“And we won’t apologize for ordinary family life.”

Marlene’s face reddened.

“You people think you’re entitled to everything.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No. We think everyone is entitled to something.”

Marlene looked from Sarah to Daniel.

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?”

“That you deserve peace,” Sarah said. “And we deserve to live here too.”

Marlene had no answer.

She turned and went inside.

But the conflict had changed.

Until that moment, Daniel and Sarah had been trying to find a compromise with someone who wanted control.

Now they had made their boundary clear.

The next question was whether the rest of the neighborhood would stand behind it.
